Low parasite infestations in high densities: The paradox of woodpigeons in urban areas

Alejandro Gutierrez-Galan et al.

Summary: This study compares the ectoparasites characteristic of woodpigeons in urban and rural environments and finds that urban woodpigeons have fewer parasites and different parasite species compared to rural woodpigeons. The lower ectoparasite load of urban hosts may contribute to their greater growth and reproductive success.

Climate change impacts on ticks and tick-borne infections

Patricia A. Nuttall

Summary: There is generally a lack of evidence showing the impact of climate change on ticks and tick-borne infections. However, in certain regions such as Canada and northern Europe, there have been documented cases of tick populations expanding and diseases spreading as a result of rising temperatures. In the next 50 years, these trends are likely to continue as new species establish themselves and diseases such as Lyme borreliosis and tick-borne encephalitis may become less prevalent in certain regions.

Updated taxonomic keys for European Hippoboscidae (Diptera), and expansion in Central Europe of the bird louse fly Ornithomya comosa (Austen, 1930) with the first record from Slovakia

Jozef Obona et al.

Summary: The existing keys for European Hippoboscidae are outdated, hence new identification keys are provided. Ornithomya comosa is recorded for the first time in Slovakia. The list of keds and louse flies recorded in Slovakia is increased to 20 species.

Limited domestic introgression in a final refuge of the wild pigeon

William J. Smith et al.

Summary: Domesticated animals have played a significant role culturally and economically, but their study has been relatively neglected compared to domestic plants. The domestic pigeon, as a model organism, has been pivotal in various fields such as behavior, genetics, and evolution. However, it has hybridized with its progenitor, the Rock Dove, leading to uncertainty in its genetic status. This study identifies relict undomesticated populations of Rock Doves in the British Isles using genomic and morphological data, highlighting the role of hybridization in genetic homogenization.

THE MIGRATION SYSTEM OF BARN SWALLOWS HIRUNDO RUSTICA BREEDING IN SOUTHWESTERN SPAIN AND WINTERING ACROSS WEST AFRICA

Cosme Lopez-Calderon et al.

Summary: This study used light-level geolocators to describe the migration system of Barn Swallows breeding in southwestern Spain and wintering across west Africa. The swallows were found to spend pre-migration time in southern Spain and northern Morocco during summer, and to start their autumn migration in August. They refueled in northwestern Morocco and southern Mali before arriving at their wintering areas across Ivory Coast. After wintering, they started their spring migration in late January, stopping over in Senegal and Mauritania before returning to Spain in February. One individual even traveled to England during autumn migration before spending a short wintering period in northwestern Spain.
