A silver lining in cell line authentication: Short tandem repeat analysis of 1373 cases in China from 2010 to 2019

Meijia Gu et al.

Summary: Continuous cell lines are widely used practical models in the study of disease mechanisms, particularly cancers. However, the issue of cell line cross-contamination has persisted since the 1960s, despite calls for cell line authentication by experts. Cell line abuse is also underestimated and underreported. The China Center for Type Culture Collection (CCTCC) has seen an improvement in the quality of cell lines from 2010 to 2019, which bodes well for the future.

Cell line authentication: a necessity for reproducible biomedical research

Nicole Y. Souren et al.

Summary: Misidentification of cell lines is a serious threat to scientific reproducibility. Strict multi-layered quality control, collaborations between journals, research institutions, and funders, as well as regular authentication schemes and staff training, are essential to address this issue. Future steps should focus on enhancing good cell culture practices.
