Iron plaque formation, characteristics, and its role as a barrier and/or facilitator to heavy metal uptake in hydrophyte rice (Oryza sativa L.)

Peiman Zandi et al.

Summary: The persistent bioavailability of toxic metals is the leading source of serious environmental problems, and the formation of iron oxyhydroxide plaque on the root surface of hydrophytes significantly affects plant physiology and biomass production.

Responses of key root traits in the genus Oryza to soil flooding mimicked by stagnant, deoxygenated nutrient solution

Shuai Tong et al.

Summary: Excess water can cause flooding stress and yield loss in wetland crops like rice. However, traits from wild Oryza species have been used to improve stress tolerance in cultivated rice. This study investigated the response of root traits to sudden soil flooding in several wild rice species and cultivated rice genotypes. The results showed that different species exhibited varying levels of plasticity in root traits, indicating strong anatomical and physiological responses to soil flooding.

Speciation and distribution of chromium (III) in rice root tip and mature zone: The significant impact of root exudation and iron plaque on chromium bioavailability

Peiman Zandi et al.

Summary: This study investigated the distribution of iron plaque and metabolites in rice roots and found some results regarding the uptake and bioavailability of chromium. The results showed that root regions with different maturity levels play an important role in the formation of chromium compounds and the exudation of metabolites.

Effects of Fe oxides and their redox cycling on Cd activity in paddy soils: A review

Yining Gao et al.

Summary: Cadmium (Cd) contamination of soils, especially in paddy soils, is a global problem. Fe oxides, as a key fraction of paddy soils, play a significant role in influencing the environmental behavior of Cd. This paper summarized the impact of Fe oxides on Cd activity during transformation, the difference in Cd activity between flooded and drainage periods, the relationship between Fe plaque and plant Fe2+ nutritional status, and the influence of physicochemical properties of paddy soils on the interaction between Fe oxides and Cd.

Cultivar-dependent rhizobacteria community and cadmium accumulation in rice: Effects on cadmium availability in soils and iron-plaque formation

Feng Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigates the rhizobacterial communities of two rice cultivars with different levels of Cd accumulation and their relationship with Cd accumulation at different growth stages. The results show that the HA cultivar has higher Cd content in the roots compared to the LA cultivar, and the LA cultivar has lower Cd availability in the rhizosphere and more iron plaque formation on the root surface. Microbial analysis reveals that the LA cultivar has specific bacterial taxa involved in Cd immobilization and iron plaque formation, while the HA cultivar has sulfur-oxidizing bacteria and iron reduction bacteria that promote Cd mobilization.

Regulation of iron and cadmium uptake in rice roots by iron(III) oxide nanoparticles: insights from iron plaque formation, gene expression, and nanoparticle accumulation

Guoyong Huang et al.

Summary: This study elucidated the regulatory mechanisms of Fe and Cd uptake in rice roots by FeNPs, including the effects of Fe plaque, gene expression, and NP accumulation. The application of FeNPs restricted the translocation of Fe to shoots, resulting in even lower Fe accumulation in shoots compared to those without FeNPs.

A New Method to Capture the Spatial and Temporal Heterogeneity of Aquatic Plant Iron Root Plaque In Situ

Matt A. Limmer et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that the oxygen released by aquatic plant roots forms reduced metal plaques on the root surface, which are important for microorganisms and biogeochemical cycling. A new nondestructive and repeated rhizosphere sampling technique was introduced for studying the biogeochemical characteristics of aquatic plant roots.

The barrier to radial oxygen loss impedes the apoplastic entry of iron into the roots of Urochloa humidicola

Juan de la Cruz Jimenez et al.

Summary: The study indicates that establishing a barrier to ROL can effectively prevent Fe from entering the roots, thereby enhancing the plant's tolerance to waterlogging. The exclusion of Fe at the exodermis with a strong barrier to ROL, while K uptake remains unaffected.

Root Morphology and Anatomy Affect Cadmium Translocation and Accumulation in Rice

Xiao Anwen et al.

Summary: This study found that the root morphological and anatomical characteristics of rice plants significantly affect Cd accumulation in shoots by inhibiting Cd translocation, especially through the apoplastic pathway. Pre-screening low-Cd-accumulating rice cultivars based on root morphology, anatomical characteristics, and Cd translocation rate at the seedling stage is possible.

Water Management Alters Cadmium Isotope Fractionation between Shoots and Nodes/Leaves in a Soil-Rice System

Songxiong Zhong et al.

Summary: Drainage of rice soils increases Cd solubility, leading to high Cd concentrations in rice grains. The distribution of Cd isotopes in rice plants varies under flooded and drained conditions, with nodes playing a key role in regulating Cd redistribution.

Ferrous ions inhibit Cu uptake and accumulation via inducing iron plaque and regulating the metabolism of rice plants exposed to CuO nanoparticles

Peng Yuan et al.

Summary: The addition of Fe2+ (3 mM) was found to reduce the adsorption of CuO NPs (100 mg L-1) by rice plants, leading to a decrease in Cu uptake and accumulation in roots and shoots. Fe2+ induced the formation of iron plaque and altered metabolite levels, resulting in less Cu accumulation in rice plants exposed to NPs.
