An automatic Bible in the brain: Trauma and prayer among Acholi Pentecostals in northern Uganda

Lars H. Williams

Summary: This article explores the role of prayers in the Pentecostal-charismatic community for traumatized survivors of war in post-conflict northern Uganda, suggesting that learning specific prayer regimes can aid symptom relief and recovery. Through ethnographic fieldwork and interviews, the study shows how individual prayer practices are trained, learned, and how features of prayer can change individual experiences of distress. It also discusses the use of prayer as an emotional technology in managing psychiatric symptoms within this religious community and how a focus on training of skills can contribute to debates on psychiatric expression and concepts of mind in different cultural settings.
