Alterations in soil microbial phospholipid fatty acid profile with soil depth following cropland conversion in karst region, southwest China

Li Wen et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the vertical variations of soil microbial communities under different cropland types in the karst region of southwest China. The results showed that the abundances of soil microbial communities were higher in forage grass cultivation and secondary forest areas compared to other cropland types. Soil organic carbon was identified as the primary factor affecting the abundance and structure of soil microbial communities.

Effects of Utilization Methods on C, N, P Rate and Enzyme Activity of Artificial Grassland in Karst Desertification Area

Shuzhen Song et al.

Summary: Investigating the effects of different utilization methods on soil C, N, P, and enzyme activities in grassland is important for sustainable grassland utilization. In this study, the effects of grazing grassland, mowing grassland, and enclosed grassland on soil characteristics were examined. The results showed significant differences in soil C, N, P, enzyme activity, and their ratios among the different grassland uses. Enclosed grassland had a closer ratio to the global soil ecosystem standard. Reducing soil disturbance and optimizing fertilization were found to be effective ways to improve soil enzyme activity and maintain good nutrient circulation.

Research Progress of Grassland Ecosystem Structure and Stability and Inspiration for Improving Its Service Capacity in the Karst Desertification Control

Shuyu He et al.

Summary: This study systematically reviewed the structure and stability of grassland ecosystems using the Web of Science and China National Knowledge Infrastructure databases. The results showed that the research in this field is increasing and becoming more diverse. The focus of the research is on the structure of grassland ecosystems, followed by the influencing factors of structure and stability. Key scientific questions on structural optimization, stability enhancement, and harmonizing the relationship between structure and stability are explored.

Soil Nutrients, Enzyme Activities, and Microbial Communities along a Chronosequence of Chinese Fir Plantations in Subtropical China

Junjie Lei et al.

Summary: This study investigated the characteristics of soil bacterial and fungal communities and their corresponding soil environmental factors in different growth stages of Chinese fir plantations in the subtropical region of China. The results showed that the alpha diversity of soil bacteria and fungi was higher in the middle and mature stages compared to the young stage. Soil pH, water content, organic carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, enzyme activities, and microbial biomass varied with different growth stages. The composition of soil microbial species was significantly different among the three growth stages. Soil urease and microbial biomass nitrogen were found to be the main factors influencing the composition of soil bacteria and fungi.

Soil structure and microbiome functions in agroecosystems

Martin Hartmann et al.

Summary: Soil structure, the soil microbiome, and ecosystem functioning are closely interconnected. This review explores the connections between these factors and the impact of management strategies on them in agroecosystems. The soil microbiome plays a crucial role in determining soil fertility, crop productivity, and stress tolerance in agroecosystems. The microbiome is intricately linked with soil structure, which regulates the flow of water, oxygen, and nutrients. Agricultural practices can alter soil structure, thereby affecting microbial processes, which in turn have significant consequences such as soil erosion, reduced fertility, and increased greenhouse gas emissions.

Grassland soil carbon sequestration: Current understanding, challenges, and solutions

Yongfei Bai et al.

Summary: Grasslands act as important soil carbon sinks, storing about one third of global terrestrial carbon stocks. Plant diversity increases soil organic carbon storage by enhancing carbon inputs and promoting microbial contributions. Improved grazing management and biodiversity restoration provide cost-effective solutions for climate change mitigation in grasslands.

Stoichiometric Variation in Soil Carbon, Nitrogen, and Phosphorus Following Cropland Conversion to Forest in Southwest China

Mengzhen Lu et al.

Summary: This study reveals the effects of the conversion of cropland to forest program on soil organic carbon (SOC), nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) concentrations and stoichiometric ratios in southwest China. The results show that restoration years can increase the concentrations of SOC and TN, and alter their stoichiometric ratios. The research further improves our understanding of nutrient interactions and restoration processes.

Effect of Cultivated Pastures on Soil Bacterial Communities in the Karst Rocky Desertification Area

Shuzhen Song et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigated the effects of different vegetation restoration modes on soil bacterial communities in karst rocky desertification areas. The results showed that mixed pasture restoration was the most effective in improving soil nutrient content and the diversity of soil bacterial communities. The abundance of Proteobacteria was increased in cultivated pastures, while Acidobacteria was decreased in the mixed pasture restoration mode. Soil pH and MBC were found to be important factors influencing soil bacterial communities. This finding provides valuable insights for the restoration of degraded ecosystems in karst rocky desertification areas.

The fate of antibiotic resistance genes in cow manure composting: shaped by temperature-controlled composting stages

Muhammad Fahad Sardar et al.

Summary: This study conducted temperature controlled aerobic composting and found that antibiotic resistance genes significantly decreased in the initial phase but increased in the later stages. The composting properties, especially temperature, had a significant impact on bacterial community and the abundance of antibiotic resistance genes.

Soil microbial diversity-biomass relationships are driven by soil carbon content across global biomes

Felipe Bastida et al.

Summary: Based on a global field survey, it was found that soil carbon content is closely associated with the relationship and ratio between microbial diversity and biomass in soils across different ecosystems and climate types. Particularly, the ratio of soil microbial diversity to biomass is higher in arid environments and lower in C-rich cold environments. The study indicates that reductions in soil carbon content due to land use intensification and climate change could lead to significant shifts in the microbial diversity-biomass ratio, impacting various soil processes.

Enhanced control of sulfonamide resistance genes and host bacteria during thermophilic aerobic composting of cow manure

Muhammad Fahad Sardar et al.

Summary: Traditional composting has shown certain effects in eliminating antibiotic residues, ARBs, and ARGs. However, the rebounding of ARGs during conventional aerobic composting remains a serious threat. This study found that thermophilic aerobic composting can enhance the degradation of antibiotics, limit the rebounding of ARGs, and significantly influence bacterial diversity. Network analysis revealed potential hosts of ARGs and suggested that thermophilic composting may be more efficient in controlling antibiotic resistance compared to conventional methods.
