Circulating Fatty Acids and Genetic Predisposition to Type 2 Diabetes: Gene-Nutrient Interaction Analysis

Pan Zhuang et al.

Summary: Plasma concentrations of saturated fatty acids and monounsaturated fatty acids were associated with a higher risk of T2D, while polyunsaturated fatty acids, n-6 and n-3 PUFA were related to a lower risk. Circulating MUFA and n-3 PUFA had significant interactions with genetic predisposition to T2D and FA-associated variants.

Polyunsaturated fatty acid intake and incidence of type 2 diabetes in adults: a dose response meta-analysis of cohort studies

Mingyuan Hu et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the association between polyunsaturated fatty acid (PUFA) intake and the incidence of type 2 diabetes (T2D) in adults, finding a nonlinear relationship. Total PUFA intake was associated with decreased T2D incidence in Asia, while it was associated with increased T2D incidence in Europe and Australia. Subgroup analysis based on PUFA types showed that docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) intake was associated with decreased T2D incidence, while linoleic acid (LA) intake decreased T2D incidence. In terms of gender, women's intake of total PUFA increased the risk of T2D, while total PUFA intake decreased the risk in men.

Omega-3 polyunsaturated fatty acid biomarkers and risk of type 2 diabetes, cardiovascular disease, cancer, and mortality

Hong Jiang et al.

Summary: This study conducted a meta-analysis to summarize evidence from prospective studies on the associations between omega-3 PUFA biomarkers and the risk of developing chronic diseases. The results showed that higher concentrations of marine-derived omega-3 PUFA biomarkers were associated with a significantly reduced risk of cardiovascular diseases, coronary heart disease, and total mortality. Levels of ALA were inversely associated with a lower risk of type 2 diabetes.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate the relationship between dietary n-3 and n-6 fatty acids and metabolic syndrome, and found that consistent and regular dietary intake of these fatty acids can significantly reduce the prevalence of metabolic syndrome in healthy males with normal insulin sensitivity. However, the effect of dietary intake was limited in a group with strong insulin resistance.

Summary: High intake of dietary linoleic acid (LA) and elevated concentrations of LA in the body are both significantly associated with a lower risk of type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM). These findings support dietary recommendations to consume dietary LA.
