Serum ferritin as a predictive biomarker in COVID-19. A systematic review, meta-analysis and meta-regression analysis

Karanvir Kaushal et al.

Summary: This study conducted a meta-analysis on the serum ferritin levels of COVID-19 patients at different severity levels, finding that higher severity corresponds to higher ferritin levels. Patients requiring ICU and mechanical ventilation also showed elevated ferritin levels. Serum ferritin level may serve as an important biomarker in the management of COVID-19.

Risks of myocarditis, pericarditis, and cardiac arrhythmias associated with COVID-19 vaccination or SARS-CoV-2 infection

Martina Patone et al.

Summary: The study found that there is an increased risk of myocarditis associated with the first dose of ChAdOx1 and BNT162b2 vaccines, as well as the first and second doses of the mRNA-1273 vaccine in the 1-28 days post-vaccination period. Additionally, individuals with SARS-CoV-2 infection also face a greater risk of myocarditis, pericarditis, and cardiac arrhythmia.

Hematological changes in SARS-COV-2 positive patients

Mafalda Urbano et al.

Summary: This study aimed to investigate whether blood parameters in patients with SARS-CoV-2 infection could be used as biomarkers for diagnosis and prognosis evaluation. The results showed that patients requiring ICU had an increase in leukocytes and neutrophils, and a decrease in lymphocytes at admission. The study also found that age, sex, platelets, and lymphocyte count were associated with mortality.

Covid-19 and the cardiovascular system: a comprehensive review

Rafael Bellotti Azevedo et al.

Summary: In patients infected with COVID-19, cardiac injury is associated with higher morbimortality, and is characterized by inflammation response and multiple organ dysfunction syndrome caused by the virus. Hypertension and diabetes are common comorbidities, while cardiac injury is significantly related to inflammation biomarkers, hyperferritinemia, and leukocytosis.

Heart-rate-variability (HRV), predicts outcomes in COVID-19

Maartje B. A. Mol et al.

Summary: HRV can predict survival and ICU referral in patients with COVID-19, especially in those aged 70 years and older, with low HRV being an indicator for ICU referral.
