Have News Reports on Suicide and Attempted Suicide During the COVID-19 Pandemic Adhered to Guidance on Safer Reporting? A UK-Wide Content Analysis Study

Lisa Marzano et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the quality and content of UK news reports on COVID-19-related suicides and suicide attempts. The majority of these reports explicitly linked suicidal behavior to the pandemic, often based on statements from family or friends. The impact of COVID-19 on suicidal behavior was mainly attributed to feelings of isolation, poor mental health, and government-imposed restrictions. While the overall quality of reporting was generally good, there were biases and failures to meet recommended standards.

Changes in the pattern of suicides and suicide attempt admissions in relation to the COVID-19 pandemic

Christine Reif-Leonhard et al.

Summary: This study examines the changes in suicide attempts and completed suicides during the COVID-19 pandemic in Frankfurt/Main. The number of suicide attempts decreased significantly, while the number of completed suicides remained unchanged. There were no changes in the demographic factors, diagnoses, and occupational status of suicide attempts, but there was an increase in the percentage of individuals living alone who attempted suicide. The use of intoxications as a method for suicide attempts increased, and more people attempted suicide in their own homes.

Suicide Risk and Prevention During the COVID-19 Pandemic: One Year On

Mark Sinyor et al.

Summary: Data from high and upper-middle-income countries suggest that suicide rates did not increase during the early months of the COVID-19 pandemic, but the impact of the pandemic on suicide is complex. Governments and societies must take specific steps to mitigate harm and prevent suicides in the late stages and aftermath of the pandemic.

The Impact of Infectious Disease-Related Public Health Emergencies on Suicide, Suicidal Behavior, and Suicidal Thoughts A Systematic Review

Tiago C. Zortea et al.

Summary: Current evidence suggests a potential association between previous epidemics and increased risk of suicide-related outcomes, with higher suicide rates observed among older adults during SARS and in the year following the epidemic. Additionally, there are associations between SARS/Ebola exposure and suicide attempts, as well as COVID-19 distress and recent suicidal ideation. Further research is needed to explore the impact of COVID-19 on suicide outcomes.
