The Sonogashira Coupling on Palladium Milling Balls-A new Reaction Pathway in Mechanochemistry

Wilm Pickhardt et al.

Summary: The Sonogashira coupling was successfully performed on the surface of milling tools using pure Pd and Pd coated steel balls under direct mechanocatalytical conditions. By optimizing co-catalyst forming additives, a protocol was developed that generates quantitative yields for various substrates within as little as 90 minutes under aerobic conditions. Spectroscopic, diffractive, and in situ methods identified a previously unknown and highly reactive complex of the co-catalyst copper, which differs from known complexes in liquid phase Sonogashira couplings, suggesting different reaction pathways in mechanochemistry.

Mechanochemistry-Directed Ligand Design: Development of a High-Performance Phosphine Ligand for Palladium-Catalyzed Mechanochemical Organoboron Cross-Coupling

Tamae Seo et al.

Summary: Mechanochemical synthesis using transition-metal catalysts has advantages such as low solvent waste and short reaction times. However, the direct use of transition-metal catalysts in mechanochemical reactions without modifications limits the development of efficient cross-coupling processes. This study presents a new approach, using mechanochemistry-directed design to develop ligands for Suzuki-Miyaura cross-coupling reactions. The embedding of the ligand into a poly(ethylene glycol) polymer prevents catalyst deactivation and shows high catalytic activity at room temperature.
