Copper-Based Electrocatalysts for Nitrate Reduction to Ammonia

Jia-Yi Fang et al.

Summary: Ammonia (NH3) is a crucial industrial chemical used for fuel and fertilizer purposes. The conventional Haber-Bosch route for NH3 synthesis is responsible for 1.2% of global annual CO2 emissions. To address this issue, the electrosynthesis of NH3 from nitrate anion (NO3-) reduction has emerged as an alternative method, which not only turns waste into valuable resources but also mitigates the adverse impacts of excessive NO3- contamination in the environment. This review provides an overview of recent advances in electrocatalytic NO3- reduction using Cu-based nanostructured materials, including their performance, modification strategies, and the electrocatalytic mechanism.

Engineering CuOx Nanoparticles on Cu Foam for Acidic Nitrate Reduction to Ammonium

Maggie Lim et al.

Summary: The electrochemical conversion of NOx to ammonium using renewable energy is a green alternative for decarbonization. This study investigates the impact of CuOx oxidation state on the conversion of NOx to ammonium under acidic conditions. The results show that tuning Cu oxidation state can enhance NH4+ yield and Faradaic efficiency, and the Cu2O/Cu interfaces play a crucial role in the reaction. The study also demonstrates the stability of these interfaces during long-term electrolysis.

On the Electrochemically Active Surface Area Determination of Electrodeposited Porous Cu 3D Nanostructures

Birute Serapiniene et al.

Summary: Porous 3D Cu layers were electrodeposited and different electrochemically active surface area determination methods were evaluated. The results showed that double-layer capacitance measurements yield higher values compared to underpotential deposition technique for Cu 3D nanostructures.

All-electrochemical synthesis of tunable fine-structured nanoporous copper films

Ezer Castillo et al.

Summary: Nanoporous copper films with fine ligament length scales and high surface area were prepared using an all-electrochemical approach. The parameters that were found to affect the resulting film structure were the composition of the dealloying bath, the atomic composition of the precursor alloy, and the addition of nickel. By controlling these parameters, a wide range of nano-scaled nanoporous copper films with specific surface characteristics were obtained.

Nanostructured Copper-Based Electrodes Electrochemically Synthesized on a Carbonaceous Gas Diffusion Membrane with Catalytic Activity for the Electroreduction of CO2

Martina Serafini et al.

Summary: Four different nanostructured Cu-based electrocatalysts were designed via a one-step electrodeposition process on a three-dimensional carbonaceous membrane. These electrocatalysts showed promising catalytic activities toward CO2 electroreduction in liquid phase, with a remarkable selectivity toward acetic acid achieved when using the oxidized materials. Among them, the best electrocatalytic activity was observed for the Cu2O-Cu-0 catalyst, which exhibited stable performance and low current density.

Hydrogen Bubble Templated Metal Foams as Efficient Catalysts of CO2 Electroreduction

Soma Vesztergom et al.

Summary: The electrochemical deposition of metal foams around co-generated hydrogen bubbles that act as templates for the deposition is a promising, cheap and simple approach to the fabrication of new electrocatalyst materials. Metal foams obtained by dynamic hydrogen bubble templating offer an intrinsically high electrical conductance with an open porous structure that enables the fast transport of gases and liquids. The confined space within the pores of these metal foams may act as small reactors that can harbor reactions not possible at an open electrode interface.

Porous Electrodeposited Cu as a Potential Electrode for Electrochemical Reduction Reactions of CO2

Jidsucha Darayen et al.

Summary: This study systematically investigates the relationship between electroplating parameters and the pore morphology and internal surface area of copper deposits for electrochemical reduction reactions of CO2. Through microstructural engineering, porous copper electrodes were found to yield higher production rates of acetaldehyde, acetate, and ethanol compared to copper foil electrodes, presenting opportunities for enhancing CO2 reduction reactions.

Surface characterization of copper electrocatalysts by lead underpotential deposition

Paula Sebastian-Pascual et al.

Summary: The study evaluates the lead (Pb) underpotential deposition (UPD) on well-defined Cu electrode surfaces as a tool to analyze the surface state and determine the presence and distribution of domains on Cu catalysts. The voltammetric profile of Pb UPD is strongly sensitive to changes in the structure of the Cu electrode, allowing for the monitoring of the appearance of new defects and domains. Pb UPD can provide the electrochemical fingerprint of Cu catalysts and separate the contribution of different facets and defects in the surface structure.
