Sensitivity analysis of power system small signal stability to geomagnetic disturbances

Yuan Si et al.

Summary: Geomagnetic disturbances can cause geomagnetically induced currents, leading to saturation of transformers and affecting the power grid. This study focuses on the impact of geomagnetic disturbances on voltage stability in conventional systems without wind power. It investigates the influence of geomagnetic disturbances on the small signal stability of doubly-fed induction generators integrated systems. The results show that oscillation frequency and damping ratio are affected by wind power ratio and geomagnetic disturbances, providing insights for mitigating the impact of geomagnetic disturbances on small signal stability.

Simulation of Geomagnetically Induced Currents in a Low-Latitude 500 kV Power Network During a Solar Superstorm

J. J. Zhang et al.

Summary: Geomagnetically induced currents (GICs) are a main manifestation of space weather effects on human technical facilities. This study investigates the response of the Chinese Guangdong 500 kV power grid to a solar superstorm using the Space Weather Modeling Framework. The research finds that the risk of GICs in the power grid is very high and field-aligned currents play an important role in producing GICs in middle- and low-latitude power grids during solar superstorms.

Effect of the Earth's lateral conductivity variations on geomagnetically induced currents in power grids

Xuan Wang et al.

Summary: Modeling geomagnetically induced currents (GIC) is crucial for assessing the risk to power systems during geomagnetic disturbances. This study developed models considering lateral conductivity variations in the Earth, showing significant effects on GIC behavior. Results suggest that these effects should be considered in GIC modeling and risk assessment.

Estimating the Geoelectric Field and Electric Power Transmission Line Voltage During a Geomagnetic Storm in Alberta, Canada Using Measured Magnetotelluric Impedance Data: The Influence of Three-Dimensional Electrical Structures in the Lithosphere

Darcy Cordell et al.

Summary: This study estimates the geoelectric field resulting from a magnetic storm on September 8, 2017 in Alberta and southeastern British Columbia using an array of magnetotelluric (MT) impedance measurements. The geoelectric field derived from the MT impedance data shows partial polarization in southern Alberta, with the highest magnitude in northeastern Alberta. The study also suggests that using the MT impedances results in higher estimated voltages on transmission lines in certain regions compared to using a 1-D conductivity model.

The influence of the coast effect on geomagnetically induced currents: A modeling study

Xuan Wang et al.

Summary: This paper uses the finite element method (FEM) to model the influence of different Earth conductivity structures on geoelectric fields, and illustrates how changes in geoelectric fields impact GIC in a power grid using a simple power system model. The results show that ocean structures have a significant impact on GIC, especially at lower frequencies, indicating the need to consider shifts in geoelectric fields near coastlines when assessing GIC risk for power grids located within the coastal influence range.
