Recent advances on materials and processes for intensified production of blue hydrogen

Andy N. Antzaras et al.

Summary: Steam reforming of natural gas is the main method for large-scale hydrogen production, but it has high energy requirements and carbon footprint. Therefore, the development of alternative reforming methods, such as chemical looping reforming and sorption enhanced reforming, has gained interest. This paper critically reviews the feasibility, required materials, and strategies to improve the performance of these novel reforming concepts for intensified blue hydrogen production, and also discusses research efforts on hybrid processes combining the advantages of different intensified concepts.

Synthesis and application of Ni-Co bimetallic catalysts supported on hollow sphere Al2O3 in steam methane reforming

Fatemeh Zarei-Jelyani et al.

Summary: Steam methane reforming is an important reaction for producing environmentally-friendly hydrogen from methane. In this study, Ni-Co co-impregnated catalysts were synthesized using a hollow sphere alumina support, leading to improved stability and performance. Among the catalysts tested, Ni-2-Co-1/H-Al2O3 showed the highest methane conversion and hydrogen yield at 700 ℃.

Optimisation of a sorption-enhanced chemical looping steam methane reforming process

Jon Powell et al.

Summary: The study investigated the impact of operating conditions on hydrogen production and process thermal efficiency for the SE-CL-SMR process, finding that factors such as CaO/C ratio, MeO/C ratio, and oxidising agent species play a significant role. The introduction of CaO reduces coke formation, while increasing MeO/C and S/C enhances hydrogen yield and purity. The presence of CuO allows for adiabatic reactor operation and an increase in NiO:CuO ratio leads to higher methane conversion rates.
