Curcumin a Natural Phenol and Its Therapeutic Role in Cancer and Photodynamic Therapy: A Review

Glory Kah et al.

Summary: Cancer remains a major global health concern, and the need for better treatment options is evident. Curcumin, a natural compound derived from turmeric, has shown promise as an anticancer agent and a photosensitizer in cancer photodynamic therapy. However, its poor bioavailability and pharmacokinetics have limited its clinical utility. This review examines the properties, bioavailability, and safety of curcumin, focusing on its role in cancer therapy and PDT, as well as recent advancements in improving its bioavailability using nanoformulations and delivery systems.

Exploitation of the Antibacterial Properties of Photoactivated Curcumin as 'Green' Tool for Food Preservation

Zunaira Munir et al.

Summary: In the search for non-chemical and green methods to counteract bacterial contamination of foods, the combination of natural substances with antimicrobial properties and light irradiation, known as photodynamic inactivation (PDI), has been extensively studied. Curcumin, in particular, has shown to be a potent natural antibacterial and effective photosensitizer that can activate under visible light, particularly blue light. Practical applications have been investigated for food preservation and prevention of bacterial contaminants.

Flavonoids as Protein Disulfide Isomerase Inhibitors: Key Molecular and Structural Features for the Interaction

Xinyuan Liao et al.

Summary: This study identified H256 as the key residue for the interaction between quercetin-3-rutinoside and protein disulfide isomerase (PDI). The results also showed that the flavonoid skeleton, but not the rutinoside conjugate, is embedded in the major binding pocket of PDI. In addition, the inhibition of PDI activity by quercetin-3-rutinoside is dependent on the phenoxyl group at position 7. These findings provide new insights into the molecular mechanism of PDI inhibition by flavonoids.

Nano Antiviral Photodynamic Therapy: a Probable Biophysicochemical Management Modality in SARS-CoV-2

Khatereh Khorsandi et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the potential therapeutic effects of Nano antiviral photodynamic therapy on COVID-19, based on data extracted from various published studies. While studies indicate that aPDT and Nano-based aPDT may be useful in viral pulmonary complications, there is a lack of direct research on SARS-Cov-2. Recent findings suggest that Nano-based aPDT could play a role in controlling the stages of viral infections, highlighting the need for further investigation in utilizing nanomedicine for COVID-19 management.

A versatile nanocomposite based on nanoceria for antibacterial enhancement and protection from aPDT-aggravated inflammation via modulation of macrophage polarization

Yue Sun et al.

Summary: In this study, a composite nanomaterial was designed to achieve simultaneous sterilization and inflammation elimination by combining a photosensitizer and ROS scavenger. This nano-based platform can modulate host immunity by down-regulating pro-inflammatory macrophages and up-regulating anti-inflammatory and regenerative macrophages. Additionally, the local ROS level induced by activated inflammation pathway can be adjusted in a very long time due to the charge conversion effect of CeO2, improving the regenerative potential of inflammatory surrounding tissues in the animal model.
