Calcium isotopes track volatile components in the mantle sources of alkaline rocks and associated carbonatites

Subducted carbonates not required: Deep mantle melting explains stable Ca isotopes in kimberlite magmas

Summary: The study investigates the Ca isotope compositions of kimberlites and their relation to mantle-derived magmas and the deep Earth carbon cycle. The results show that kimberlites have similar Ca isotope compositions as carbonatites and OIB, and slightly lower than MORB. The findings suggest that kimberlites do not require subducted carbonates in their mantle sources, despite their high CO2 contents. The study also suggests that the pressure effects on Ca isotope fractionation may not be significant for kimberlite melts.

Plume-lithosphere interactions and LIP-triggered climate crises constrained by the origin of Karoo lamproites

Summary: We discovered a diamondiferous lamproite event in Zambia that happened about 180 million years ago, which links ultrapotassic volcanism with the early Jurassic Karoo flood basalt province in sub-Saharan Africa. The eruption of the cratonic lamproites was unrelated to rifting and instead triggered by plume-lithosphere interactions during the Karoo LIP event. The geochemical characteristics of the lamproite samples suggest that they originated from a metasomatized peridotitic mantle source and underwent incompatible element enrichment during tectonic activity associated with the Rodinia supercontinent formation.

Ultrahigh-pressure mantle metasomatism in continental collision zones recorded by post-collisional mafic rocks

Summary: This study reports the first identification of metasomatic sources formed at >200 km in continental collision zones, which led to the formation of post-collisional mafic magmas in the Sulu ultrahigh-pressure terrane in eastern China. The magmas are ultrapotassic and have a deep source with residual garnet and K-richterite, highlighting an alternative mechanism for the genesis of post-collisional magmas.

Pressure and concentration effects on intermineral calcium isotope fractionation involving garnet

Summary: In this study, the effects of pressure and Ca/Fe concentration on calcium isotopes in garnet were investigated using first-principles calculations. The results show that increasing Ca and Fe concentrations lead to an increase in the average Ca-O bond length and a decrease in the reduced partition function ratio of Ca-44/Ca-40. Pressure also affects the Ca-O bond length and partition function ratio, with an increase in pressure leading to a decrease in the bond length and an increase in the ratio.

The factors controlling equilibrium inter-mineral Ca isotope fractionation: Insights from first-principles calculations

Summary: In this study, equilibrium Ca isotope fractionation factors are calculated using density functional theory, revealing the importance of bond length in predicting isotope fractionation. The effect of the jadeite effect is found to be insignificant, and the heavy isotope enrichment between diopside and anorthite can be reversed at high pressure. The study provides insights into the factors controlling Ca isotope fractionation and suggests that the RPFR of granitic magma may be lower than that of basaltic magma.

Decoupling between Mg and Ca isotopes in alkali basalts: Implications for geochemical differentiation of subduction zone fluids

Summary: Chemical metasomatism of the mantle wedge by slab-derived fluids is an important mechanism for the compositional features of mafic magmas above oceanic subduction zones. The decoupling of Mg and Ca isotopes in alkali basalts from the South Qinling Orogen in central China indicates possible physicochemical differentiation during the transport of metasomatic agents. These basalts exhibit OIB-like trace element distribution patterns and show decoupling between Mg and Ca isotopes, providing new insights into the differentiation behaviors of subduction zone fluids.

Ca-Sr isotope and chemical evidence for distinct sources of carbonatite and silicate mantle metasomatism

Summary: Light rare earth element enrichments in mantle peridotites without enrichments in high-field-strength elements are commonly attributed to inputs from carbonate-rich melts known as 'carbonatite' metasomatism. This study compared models of silicate and carbonatite metasomatism in peridotites and found distinct chemical signatures between the two, with carbonatite metasomatism potentially yielding the lowest Ca-isotope values. High Sr content and Sr-87/Sr-86 ratios may serve as indicators of carbonatite metasomatism in mantle rocks.

Ca isotope systematics of carbonatites: Insights into carbonatite source and evolution
