On improving the memorability of system-assigned recognition-based passwords

Mahdi Nasrullah Al-Ameen et al.

Summary: This study explores the technique of enhancing password memorability by incorporating a scientific understanding of long-term memory. In multiple lab and field studies, it is found that providing verbal cues and adding related images to system-assigned keywords significantly improve login success rates and usability. These findings suggest a promising research direction for increasing the memorability of system-assigned passwords.

Two studies of the perceptions of risk, benefits and likelihood of undertaking password management behaviours

Burak Merdenyan et al.

Summary: Passwords are the most common form of authentication in the digital world, but people engage in risky behaviors such as re-using, writing down, and sharing passwords. Two studies found that people's perceptions of the risks and benefits of password management behaviors influence their likelihood of undertaking them. This has implications for how information about risky password behaviors is presented to users and general education about password security.
