Occurrences, Sources, and Human Health Risk Assessments of Polycyclic Aromatic Hydrocarbons in Marine Organisms From Temperate Coastal Area

Shuheng Ji et al.

Summary: The pollution characteristics of 16 polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAHs) in marine organism species were studied in the coastal area of the East China Sea. 2- and 3-ring PAHs were found to be the most abundant compounds in the studied organisms. The sources of PAHs were identified as coal combustion, followed by mixture of gasoline combustion, oil combustion, crude oil spill and vehicle emissions. The assessment of the cancer risk to human health via ingestion of marine organisms showed an acceptable but non-negligible risk.

Dredging impacts on the toxicity and development of sediment quality values in a semi-arid region (Ceara state, NE Brazil)

Lucas Buruaem Moreira et al.

Summary: The study evaluated the impact of sediment dredging on sediment quality in the harbor areas of Mucuripe bay, Brazil. It found that after dredging operations, Cd, Cr, Cu, and Zn concentrations decreased while levels of TBT dropped, but phosphorus, aliphatic and polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons increased. Toxic effects persisted due to post-dredging recontamination combined with other sources such as urban runoff, wastewater discharges, harbor activities, and antifouling particles.

Sediment contamination and toxicity of Marine Protected Areas in southeastern Brazilian coast: A baseline for management planning

Lucas Buruaem Moreira et al.

Summary: Recent studies have shown that the effectiveness of Marine Protected Areas (MPAs) is threatened by toxic effects of contaminants. This study assessed sediment quality in the North Shore Marine Protected Area (NSMPA), with results indicating low contamination and providing a baseline for conservation management plans.
