A simple, low cost and fast sample preparation method for fluorine determination by ISE in leguminous seeds and oilseeds

Paola C. Crestani et al.

Summary: This study reports for the first time the use of microwave-induced combustion in disposable vessels (MIC-DV) as a simple and fast sample preparation step for fluoride determination in leguminous seeds and oilseeds samples using an ion-selective electrode (ISE). Various experimental conditions of MIC-DV were evaluated and the accuracy of the MIC-DV/ISE method was compared to ion chromatography, showing good agreement (94-106%). The method allows for lower limits of quantification (8.3-16 μg g-1) compared to the AOAC method (40 μg g-1), with minimal reagent usage and handling, making it a greener and more portable option.

The Performance and Mechanism of a Mg-Al Double-Layer Oxide in Chloride ion Removal from an Aqueous Solution

Xueqin Xu et al.

Summary: The increasing threat of chloride ions (Cl-) has led researchers to explore efficient removal technologies. Sewage treatment with a double-layer hydroxide/oxide (LDH/LDO) is receiving increasing attention. In this work, Mg-Al LDO adsorbents were produced by the calcination of the Mg-Al LDH precursor, which was constituted by improved coprecipitation. The experimental results showed that a better porous structure endowed the Mg-Al LDO with outstanding adsorption properties for Cl-. The adsorption process was well matched to the pseudo-second-order kinetics model and the Freundlich model. Under optimal conditions, more than 97% of the Cl- could be eliminated. Moreover, the removal efficiency was greater than 90% even after 11 adsorption-desorption cycles. It was found that the electrostatic interaction between Cl- and the positively charged Mg-Al LDO laminate, coupled with the reconstruction of the layer structure, was what dominated the Cl- removal process.

Graphene Oxide Nanoadsorbent for the Removal of Fluoride Ion from Groundwater: Adsorbent Performance and Adsorption Mechanism

Bayisa Meka Chufa et al.

Summary: The deterioration of groundwater quality caused by fluoride is a major reason for drinking water shortage in the rift valley region. This study investigated the adsorption of fluoride from groundwater using graphene oxide (GO) and found that it can effectively remove fluoride with removal rates of 99.3% for NaF prepared solution and 91.6% for real samples. GO also demonstrated recyclable properties after adsorption. The kinetics of adsorption followed a pseudo-second order model and the adsorption isotherm fit well with the Freundlich model, with an adsorption capacity of 301.43 mg/g.

An advantageous analytical method for the determination of fluoride in saliva exploiting smartphone-based digital-image colorimetry

Fatih Polat

Summary: This study aimed to determine fluoride in human saliva using a smartphone camera and the SPADNS method. The RGB values were used to establish the analytical linearity. The method was validated using UV-vis spectroscopy and showed good performance with a detection limit of 0.06 mg/L, a relative standard deviation of 0.31%, and an R-2 value of 0.995. The method was also successfully applied to calculate the residual fluoride in human saliva from toothpaste. The results obtained with the smartphone camera were consistent with those from the UV-vis device, showing the potential of this method for dentistry and medicine.

Smartphone-based colorimetric determination of fluoride anions using polymethacrylate optode

N. Saranchina et al.

Summary: The study developed a new transparent polymer optode for determining fluoride anions, which changes color upon contact with fluoride ions. A processing algorithm was developed to calculate fluoride concentration from RGB color-coordinate system, with a linear range of 0.1-30 mg.L-1 and a detection limit of 0.03 mg.L-1, offering rapid results for drinking water quality control.
