Exploring microRNAs in craniofacial regenerative medicine

Dan Su et al.

Summary: MicroRNAs (miRs) are important regulators in bone development and regeneration. They can be delivered to defect sites for treating craniofacial bone defects. However, there are challenges in terms of efficiency, specificity, and safety. This review compares different miR reagents and discusses their efficacy and the use of newer technologies in treating and repairing oral tissues.

Molecules Inducing Dental Stem Cells Differentiation and Bone Regeneration: State of the Art

Anastasia Ariano et al.

Summary: Teeth contain mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) that promote tooth growth and repair. Dental-derived stem cells (d-DSCs), including dental pulp stem cells (DPSCs) and dental bud stem cells (DBSCs), have shown great potential in bone tissue engineering. The use of bone-associated factors and small molecular compounds has been found to enhance stem cell differentiation and osteogenesis. Natural and non-natural compounds found in fruits, vegetables, and drugs have also been explored for their ability to enhance MSC osteogenic differentiation and bone formation. This review focuses on the research conducted in the past decade on DPSCs and DBSCs, aiming to identify compounds that can stimulate d-DSC proliferation and osteogenic differentiation for bone regeneration.

In vitro behaviour of human gingival fibroblasts cultured on 3D-printed titanium alloy with hydrogenated TiO2 nanotubes

Yatong Guo et al.

Summary: The study shows that electrochemical anodic oxidation and high-temperature hydrogenation can create a superhydrophilic micro-nano composite morphology on the surface of SLM titanium alloy, promoting the early adhesion and proliferation of human gingival fibroblasts and improving the expression of cell adhesion-related genes and fibronectin.

Material characterization and bacterial interaction of titanium discs produced by selective laser melting

M. Petrini et al.

Summary: The aim of this study was to characterize the surface topography of two new surfaces produced in Ti6Al4V by selective laser melting (SLM) and study the biofilm formation of Streptococcus oralis on these surfaces. The results showed that organic acids-etching samples had higher nano-roughness, ripple texture, and wettability compared to machined and electrochemical polishing (EL) samples. The bacterial count and biofilm biomass were significantly lower on the organic acids-etching samples, and biofilm formation was inversely correlated with nano-roughness.

Osseointegration of 3D-printed titanium implants with surface and structure modifications

Ui-Lyong Lee et al.

Summary: This study establishes a mechanical and histological basis for the development of biocompatible maxillofacial reconstruction implants by combining 3D-printed porous titanium structures and surface treatment. The results show that the internal mesh structure and surface modification of titanium scaffolds can improve cell attachment and proliferation rates, but have different effects on in vitro osteogenic differentiation and in vivo osseointegration, with non-mesh structure/non-surface modified scaffolds showing the most appropriate treatment effect.

Mechanical properties and osteoblast proliferation of complex porous dental implants filled with magnesium alloy based on 3D printing

Xuetao Zhang et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a complex porous dental implant with biodegradable magnesium alloy designed using selective laser melting (SLM). Finite element analysis (FEA) was used to simulate stress distribution in dental implants at different stages. In vitro experiments showed that the porous structure can enhance the bearing capacity of dental implants and promote osteoblast proliferation.

Mechanical Properties of Porous Structures for Dental Implants: Experimental Study and Computational Homogenization

Ales Jira et al.

Summary: This experimental and numerical study investigates titanium porous microstructures for modern dental implants, comparing Trabecular and gyroid structures. Limitations of selective laser melting technology for small microstructures with 500 μm pore size are identified. Discrepancies between measured and predicted elastic properties of titanium structures call for further research, particularly for complex gyroid structures.

Surface Roughness of Dental Implant and Osseointegration

Geraldo Roberto Martins Matos

Summary: Despite advancements in biomaterials field, the ideal surface roughness for osseointegration remains unclear. The clinical relevance of the study on surface nanoroughness of dental implants and osseointegration is yet unknown. Innovative findings on nanoroughness have potential applications in dental implantology, maxillofacial or orthopedic implant surfaces, and cardiovascular implants in contact with patient's blood.
