Analysis of internal soliton signals and their eastward propagation in the Alboran Sea: exploring the effect of subinertial forcing and fortnightly variability

Marina Bolado-Penagos et al.

Summary: In this study, internal soliton signals recorded in the Strait of Gibraltar were analyzed to understand their eastward propagation and the impact of subinertial forcing. The assessment of soliton activity was carried out through in-situ data, numerical modelling, and an analytical approach. The arrival of solitons over the continental slope of the northwestern Alboran Sea showed fortnightly variability during spring tides, which can be attributed to the subinertial variability driven by atmospheric forcing.

Hydrodynamic connectivity and dispersal patterns of a transboundary species (Pagellus bogaraveo) in the Strait of Gibraltar and adjacent basins

Irene Nadal et al.

Summary: This study used a model simulation to determine that the blackspot seabream in the Strait of Gibraltar area is mainly influenced by the Atlantic Jet and tidal modulation in terms of dispersal pathways. The spawning depth in the Strait of Gibraltar is a critical factor for the species.

Unravelling the drivers of variability in body condition and reproduction of the European sardine along the Atlantic-Mediterranean transition

M. Caballero-Huertas et al.

Summary: This study analyzed the body condition and reproduction data of Sardina pilchardus and found that sardines from Southern Portugal-Gulf of Cadiz had higher energy reserves and better reproductive abilities compared to those from the Alboran Sea. The researchers suggested that mature individuals might migrate from the former area to the spawning areas in the latter.

Bioregionalization of the coastal and open oceans of British Columbia and Southeast Alaska based on Sentinel-3A satellite-derived phytoplankton seasonality

Christian Marchese et al.

Summary: Classifying the coastal and open oceans of British Columbia (BC) and Southeast Alaska (SEA) into bioregions based on phytoplankton biomass patterns can help identify habitats and assess future changes. A two-step classification procedure was developed to define ten bioregions using high-resolution satellite data. The study revealed spatial differences and seasonal variations in phytoplankton dynamics among the bioregions.

The fate of Guadalquivir River discharges in the coastal strip of the Gulf of Cadiz. A study based on the linking of watershed catchment and hydrodynamic models

Juan J. Gomiz-Pascual et al.

Summary: A catchment model and a hydrodynamic model were used to simulate the spreading of turbidity plumes in the Gulf of Cadiz caused by sediment discharges from the Guadalquivir River basin under different meteorological conditions. The study revealed that the direction and intensity of winds play a significant role in the transport of the plume towards the Strait of Gibraltar and the Alboran Sea. The combination of these models proves suitable for predicting the evolution and movement of sediment plumes, encouraging future applications in prediction systems.

Prochlorococcus, Synechococcus, and picoeukaryotic phytoplankton abundances in the global ocean

Natalia Visintini et al.

Summary: Despite being the most abundant photosynthetic group on Earth, marine picophytoplankton is often overlooked in dynamic ecosystem models due to sparse data and lack of distribution baseline. By presenting three datasets to assess the global abundance of key picophytoplankton groups, this study aims to improve our understanding of their role in the global ecosystem.
