Optical CO2 gas sensor based on liquid crystals in a textile grid

Ali Goudarzi et al.

Summary: Given the increasing concerns about global warming, measuring and controlling CO2 levels is of great value. Liquid crystals hold promise for fabricating gas sensors, and a sensitive optical gas sensor for real-time monitoring of CO2 gas has been developed using a textile grid impregnated with LC and DEA. The sensor can detect CO2 gas concentrations ranging from 300 to 10,000 ppm by tracing optical texture changes and has a response time of 12 seconds and a recovery time of 7 seconds at 800 ppm.

Rapid and Label-Free Methanol Identification in Alcoholic Beverages Utilizing a Textile Grid Impregnated with Chiral Nematic Liquid Crystals

Mohammadreza G. Shemirani et al.

Summary: In this study, a simple, low-cost, and portable sensor for methanol detection in alcoholic beverages was fabricated using chiral nematic liquid crystals (CLCs) and a textile grid. The sensor relies on the reorientation of liquid crystal molecules to detect different concentrations of methanol in alcoholic beverages and determines the methanol content by observing the changes in the colorful textures of CLCs and the intensity of the output light.

Optical Imaging of Beta-Amyloid Plaques in Alzheimer's Disease

Ziyi Luo et al.

Summary: Alzheimer's disease is a multifactorial, irreversible neurodegenerative disease characterized by the abnormal accumulation of Aβ plaques in the brain, leading to neuronal dysfunction and cognitive impairment. Optical imaging, with its noninvasiveness and high sensitivity, is emerging as a promising tool for the diagnosis and study of Aβ buildup in AD research.

Ultrasensitive Detection of Alzheimer's Amyloids on a Plasmonic-Gold Platform

Hsiao-Fen Han et al.

Summary: More than 55 million people worldwide live with dementia, with nearly 10 million new cases annually, mainly caused by Alzheimer's disease. Early detection of AD has been challenging due to limited brain imaging facilities and the invasive nature of cerebrospinal fluid assays. A rapid, specific, and ultrasensitive immunoassay using pGOLD chips has shown potential for detection of AD biomarkers at subpicogram per milliliter levels, offering great application potential for early AD detection using blood samples.

A portable digital optical kanamycin sensor developed by surface-anchored liquid crystal droplets

Fangchao Yin et al.

Summary: A new method for detecting kanamycin using surface-anchored liquid crystal droplets has been proposed, with the aid of CTAB and a kanamycin aptamer. A portable device was built to measure the optical luminance of the LC droplets, which can detect kanamycin with a concentration below 0.1 ng/mL and is effective in real samples such as milk and honey.

Development of liquid crystal biosensor for the detection of amyloid beta-42 levels associated with Alzheimer's disease

Emine Kemiklioglu et al.

Summary: This study developed a biosensor based on liquid crystal orientation to detect A beta 42 antibody-antigen binding events. The disturbed LC orientation was used to successfully detect low concentrations of A beta 42 peptide. The system was also capable of detecting the concentration of ApoE4 protein by monitoring the reflection spectra.

Summary: This study used plasmon-assisted effects to investigate the behavior of A beta(25-35) on silver nanoparticles, revealing the interaction mechanism between peptides and metals and providing valuable information on peptide secondary structure. The findings are crucial for designing plasmon-based nanoplatforms and have promising applications in Alzheimer's disease detection and treatment based on the bioaccumulation of toxic peptides on nanoparticles.
