Experimental study on the competition between carbon dioxide hydrate and ice below the freezing point

Yan Li et al.

Summary: As climate change and industrial requirements intensify, the potential of CO2 hydrates for carbon storage has gained attention. However, the subzero behavior of the CO2-H2O system is not well understood and requires further research. This study investigated the growth mechanisms of CO2 gas hydrate and ice below the quadruple point. The results showed that preferential hydrate formation leads to ice dissolution at small subcooling temperatures, while ice forms first and hydrate mainly forms a fibrous envelope at large subcooling temperatures.

Re-definition of the region suitable for CO2/CH4 replacement into hydrates as a function of the thermodynamic difference between CO2 hydrate formation and dissociation

Alberto Maria Gambelli et al.

Summary: The replacement of methane with carbon dioxide is the most promising solution for natural gas hydrate exploitation, but the actual efficiency is much lower than the ideal value. This article focuses on the suitable thermodynamic region for replacement. The region effectively suitable for replacement is narrower than previously believed and lies between the dissociation curve of methane hydrates and the formation curve of CO2 hydrates. Experimental results confirm that methane recovery is significantly higher when replacing above the dissociation curve.

Influence of structural transformation on guest exchange behavior in the sII hydrate-(CO2 + N-2) replacement for energy recovery and CO2 sequestration

Jonghyuk Lee et al.

Summary: This study investigated the guest exchange behavior in the sII (CH4 + C3H8) hydrate - (CO2 + N-2) replacement at different CO2 concentrations. Experimental results showed that higher CO2 concentrations and partial pressure of CO2 resulted in a greater degree of structural transformation from sII to sI hydrates, leading to higher replacement efficiency. The findings offer valuable insights into the guest exchange mechanism in sII hydrates during flue gas injection for energy recovery and CO2 sequestration.

Influences of diffusion-limited transport in the crystals and initial water on the gaseous CO2 dynamic replacement in CH4 hydrate

Yingfei Wang et al.

Summary: CO2-CH4 dynamic replacement is a method for recovering CH4, which is mainly affected by diffusion-limited transport and initial water. The study results indicate that diffusion-limited transport is the main factor inhibiting replacement, while the influence of initial water is more significant. The CO2 storage efficiency is low and is mainly influenced by initial water rather than diffusion-limited transport.
