Trends of sea-level rise effects on estuaries and estimates of future saline intrusion

Yuri Costa et al.

Summary: One of the effects of climate change is sea-level rise. Recent IPCC reports project that sea levels could rise by 1-2 meters by 2100 due to greenhouse gas emissions. Satellite studies show that this effect is uneven, with certain regions experiencing sea-level rise effects sooner, such as estuaries. However, there is limited research on the prediction of sea-level rise effects in estuaries, making this study valuable for decision-makers.

Quantifying uncertainty in coastal salinity regime for biological application using quantile regression

Simeon Yurek et al.

Summary: Salinity regimes in coastal ecosystems are dynamic and influenced by geomorphic and hydrological processes. A proposed framework for modeling coastal salinity aims to quantify uncertainty, examine time scales of response, and predict salinity continuously over space. The study found that salinity in Suwannee Sound estuary is dynamic at multiple time scales, with a nonlinear relationship to river flow rates and a stronger influence from wind than tides. The regression approach developed here can be applied to other coastal systems and has implications for future studies on fish and wildlife responses to watershed management changes.

A state-level analysis of the water system management efficiency in Mexico: Two-stage DEA approach

Marien Moran-Valencia et al.

Summary: The public water system management in Mexico has faced criticism recently due to problems with the availability of drinkable water. There are significant differences between Mexican regions in terms of renewable water availability and water system distribution. The lack of transparency in water policies has contributed to inefficient water governance in the country. This article investigates the relationship between water system management efficiency and water system improvement efficiency in Mexico, considering the population size and renewable water availability.

Sustainable land-use/Land-cover for stormwater management in three coastal watersheds in central Chile

Vladimir J. Alarcon et al.

Summary: The urbanization trend in Concon City, Chile has had a severe impact on local hydrological processes. This research suggests that adopting sustainable land-use/land-cover (LULC) in three Concon watersheds can reduce the severity of their corresponding hydrological responses. By implementing high sustainability LULC zones, runoff can be decreased while interception and infiltration are enhanced, resulting in hydrograph curves with extended lag time and moderate peak flows. Research findings can contribute to future revisions of Concon's urban plan and benefit storm water management.

Coastal inundation under concurrent mean and extreme sea-level rise in Coral Gables, Florida, USA

Vladimir J. Alarcon et al.

Summary: Southeast Florida, particularly the Coral Gables Canal watershed, is highly vulnerable to sea-level rise (SLR). This research examines the effect of concurrent mean and extreme SLR on coastal inundation and finds that online tools underestimate flooding areas significantly. The study predicts that a high SLR scenario could result in a large area of the Coral Gables Canal watershed being flooded by the year 2120, emphasizing the importance of planning flood/inundation risk management strategies.

Saltwater Intrusion into Coastal Aquifers and Associated Risk Management: Critical Review and Research Directives

Sudip Basack et al.

Summary: This article provides a critical review of saline water intrusion into coastal aquifers and associated risk management. Based on extensive literature survey and critical analysis, the authors summarize the significant contributions in the research area and point out that existing risk prevention and control methodologies may not be effective in many coastal areas. The intensifying coastal hazards due to climate change further exacerbate the challenges in coastal groundwater management.

The disparity in tree cover and ecosystem service values among redlining classes in the United States

David J. Nowak et al.

Summary: In the 1930's, the Federal Home Loan Bank Board developed a program to evaluate the risk levels of real estate in several cities using four classes (A, B, C, and D). Recent studies have shown that areas that were previously classified as high-risk (class D) have higher heat island effects, more impervious surfaces, and lower tree cover. This study analyzed all the high-risk areas in U.S. cities and confirmed that these areas have lower tree cover, more impervious surfaces, and lower forest ecosystem service values compared to other classes. The findings highlight the importance of impervious cover in the distribution of ecosystem services.

Water policy reform in the Nigeria water governance system: assessment of water resources management based on OECD Principles on Water Governance

Stephen Nwoba Ukpai

Summary: Conflicts of interest due to oversights in culture, politics, and society have impacted corporate water governance in Nigeria, leading to a lack of inclusive participation among stakeholders. Assessing the impacts of water governance, it was found that Nigerian water resources are exposed to toxic environments, with high pollutant loads contributing to public health deterioration. This highlights the importance of incorporating OECD Principles on Water Governance in Nigeria to ensure a balance between economic activities and ecological wellbeing.

Estimation of Groundwater and Salinity for the Central Biscayne Bay Coast, Florida, USA

Vladimir J. Alarcon et al.

Summary: This research presents a groundwater model for central Biscayne Bay in Florida, USA, aimed at improving salinity estimations. By comparing simulated concentrations with observed data, the results demonstrate that the model can accurately simulate salinity values within an acceptable margin of error, improving estimations by 50% compared to models that do not consider groundwater contributions. The findings have the potential to be applied to other coastal locations with dominant karst terrains.

How effective is 'greening' of urban areas in reducing human exposure to ground-level ozone concentrations, UV exposure and the 'urban heat island effect'? An updated systematic review

Teri Knight et al.

Summary: Greening of urban areas can reduce ground-level ozone concentrations, UV exposure, and mitigate the urban heat island effect. Trees and green spaces can effectively lower nitrogen oxide levels in cities and improve human thermal comfort. The selection of appropriate plants and substrates is crucial in urban greening design.

Using empirical data and modeled scenarios of Everglades restoration to understand changes in coastal vulnerability to sea level rise

Shimelis B. Dessu et al.

Summary: Coastal areas, including the Everglades, are becoming more vulnerable to sea level rise. The Comprehensive Everglades Restoration Plan aims to restore freshwater marshes, but the increasing water levels and residence times of salinity and marine nutrients are impacting coastal habitats. By comparing different restoration scenarios, the study found that the CEPPP scenario significantly improved the vulnerability of the Everglades coastal areas to sea level rise.

Water, energy and climate benefits of urban greening throughout Europe under different climatic scenarios

Emanuele Quaranta et al.

Summary: Urban greening is an effective mitigation option for climate change, with potential benefits including reduction of greenhouse gas emissions, energy demand for cooling, and improvement of water quality. Monetized benefits only cover a portion of the estimated costs, making it a potentially cost-effective solution with additional unmonetized benefits related to biodiversity, water quality, health, and wellbeing.

Summary: The study found that extreme low salinity events in Brittany increase during the positive phase of the North Atlantic Oscillation and the periods of low occurrences of the Atlantic Ridge weather regime. The increase in severe storms observed in western France since 2010 has led to a doubling of the occurrence and duration of extreme low salinity events in Brittany.
