Efficient Hydrogenation of Glucose to Polyols over Hydrotalcite-Derived PtNi Alloy Catalyst under Mild Conditions

Ge Gao et al.

Summary: A PtNi/HT catalyst was prepared and used for glucose hydrogenation, achieving a high conversion rate of 95.7% and selectivity of 90.1% to polyols at 393 K in water. The catalyst demonstrated stability and recyclability for glucose conversion. Lower reaction temperatures favored hexitol production, while higher temperatures facilitated the generation of polyols with less carbon. The Pt delta--Ni delta+ pair on PtNi/HT played a crucial role in H2 activation and adsorption during glucose hydrogenation. The basic support of PtNi/HT efficiently catalyzed glucose isomerization and retro-aldol reaction in the aqueous phase.

Selective oxidation of glucose to gluconic acid and glucaric acid with chlorin e6 modified carbon nitride as metal-free photocatalyst

Xinyu Bai et al.

Summary: Here, we report a metal-free photocatalyst consisting of BNCN and Ce6, which can efficiently and selectively oxidize glucose into gluconic acid and glucaric acid. The introduction of nitrogen defects and optimization of optical absorption have significantly enhanced the total selectivity of the photocatalytic system.

Sustainable production of gluconic acid and glucuronic acid via microwave-assisted glucose oxidation over low-cost Cu-biochar catalysts

Qiaozhi Zhang et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the production of two organic acids, gluconic acid (GOA) and glucuronic acid (GUA), from biomass-derived glucose using microwave-assisted catalytic oxidation. It demonstrates that the synthesis conditions of the Cu-based catalysts can be adjusted to improve the yield of the desired products. The study also provides insights into the reaction pathways using density functional theory simulation. These findings are valuable for the design of low-cost and efficient catalysts for glucose oxidation.

H2-Free Re-Based Catalytic Dehydroxylation of Aldaric Acid to Muconic and Adipic Acid Esters

Brigita Hocevar et al.

Summary: This study presents the first heterogeneous catalytic process for converting aldaric acid into muconic and adipic acid, using simple alcohols and solid Re/C catalysts in an inert atmosphere. The use of corrosive or hazardous reagents is avoided, with a focus on producing adipic acid directly from renewable sources.

Techno-economic analysis for biomass supply chain: A state-of-the-art review

Shirleen Lee Yuen Lo et al.

Summary: Given the increasing risk of climate change and depletion of non-renewable energy sources, biomass has become one of the most attractive alternatives for energy production worldwide. Comprehensive techno-economic analysis is essential to attract more investment in biomass-based industries, while considering uncertainties such as biomass availability, demand variation, and material price fluctuation in evaluation for more accurate feasibility estimation. The review paper provides an overview of different feasibility evaluation methods for biomass-based industries and discusses the importance of incorporating supply chain uncertainties into the evaluation model, using a Malaysian case study to illustrate the impact.

Modification of Gold Zeolitic Supports for Catalytic Oxidation of Glucose to Gluconic Acid

Adrian Walkowiak et al.

Summary: The activity of gold supported catalysts is highly dependent on the type and composition of the support, which determines the size of Au nanoparticles and influences gold's properties. This study used two types of zeolites as supports for gold, aiming to modify their properties for different performances in the oxidation of glucose to gluconic acid. Modifications of the zeolites affected the glucose conversion rate while maintaining high selectivity.
