Advancing strength and counteracting embrittlement by displacive transformation in heterogeneous high-entropy alloys containing sigma phase

Wenjun Lu et al.

Summary: In this study, a novel strategy is developed to mitigate the embrittlement of sigma phase particles in high-entropy alloys (HEAs) by utilizing displacive transformation and heterogeneous structures. The deformation behavior study reveals that the displacive transformation from face-centered cubic (FCC) to hexagonal close packed (HCP) phase effectively suppresses the propagation of microcracks in brittle sigma particles and contributes to high work hardening behavior. The transformation induced stress-relaxation around the regions containing brittle sigma particles in heterogeneously structured HEAs results in ultimate tensile strengths as high as -1.2 GPa while maintaining a ductility up to -50%.

Interstitial-driven local chemical order enables ultrastrong face-centered cubic multicomponent alloys

Zhufeng He et al.

Summary: This study presents a universal strategy for designing ultrastrong and ductile face-centered cubic (fcc) multicomponent alloys by introducing interstitial-driven local chemical order (LCO) through simple thermomechanical processing. Fine laths containing interstitial-driven LCO domains have been observed in a prototype FeMnCoCrN alloy, resulting in an ultra-high yield strength of 1.34 GPa and a uniform elongation of 13.9%. This design strategy has also been successfully applied to a multicomponent austenitic steel, suggesting its potential in developing high-performance fcc materials at low cost.

Achieving sustainable strain hardening in a carbon-doped CuFeMnNi high-entropy alloy via dual-level heterogeneous microstructures

M. Y. He et al.

Summary: Phase decomposition based on the immiscibility between Cu and Fe plays an active role in the mechanical properties of a carbon-doped CuFeMnNi high-entropy alloy. Annealing creates a dual-level heterogeneous microstructure with fine grains in the Fe-rich phase, coarse grains in the Cu-rich phase, and a transitional region at the junction. The alloy exhibits satisfactory ultimate tensile strength and excellent ductility, achieved through multistage strain-hardening mechanisms.

Controllable selection of martensitic variant enables concurrent enhancement of strength and ductility in a low-carbon steel

T. W. Yin et al.

Summary: A novel strategy is proposed to break through the trade-off between strength and ductility in metallic materials by controlling the selection of martensitic variant. By applying two-stage mechanical processing and subsequent compression, a high-strength low-carbon steel with the best combination of strength and ductility is obtained. The use of variant selection leads to the formation of a large number of fine martensitic laths and nanoscale twins, resulting in enhanced strength and ductility.

Microstructures and mechanical properties of a carbon-doped CuFeMnNi multiple-principal-element alloy

M. Y. He et al.

Summary: Carbon-doped CuFeMnNi multiple-principal-element alloys were prepared by hot-forging and subsequent annealing. The microstructures of the annealed alloys remained thermodynamically stable after long annealing at 900 degrees C. The alloys showed good softening-resistant capability with increasing annealing durations, with a slight increase in yield strength and ultimate tensile strength and a significant increase in ductility. Grain boundary strengthening, solid-solution strengthening, and precipitation strengthening collectively contributed to the alloy's strength.

Summary: This study provides experimental evidence for the existence of chemical short-range order (CSRO) in CrCoNi alloy through electron diffraction and atomic-resolution chemical mapping. The spatial correlations between different atomic pairs are revealed through quantitative covariance analysis. The findings are significant for understanding CSRO in multi-principal-element solutions.

The determining role of carbon addition on mechanical performance of a non-equiatomic high-entropy alloy

Xiaolin Li et al.

Summary: The mechanical properties and deformation mechanism of a C-doped interstitial high-entropy alloy were studied, and an excellent combination of strength and ductility was achieved through cold rolling and annealing. The deformation mechanism was found to involve dislocation slip, deformation-driven phase transformation, and deformation twinning. The simultaneous effect of phase transformation and mechanical twinning delayed the shrinkage and improved the tensile strength and plasticity.

Effects of annealing process parameters on microstructural evolution and strength-ductility combination of CoCrFeMnNi high-entropy alloy

Pengfei Wang et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the microstructures and mechanical properties of CoCrFeMnNi high-entropy alloys treated by different annealing temperatures and times. The results show that the heterogeneity of grain size contributes to the excellent tensile properties and high strain hardening rate after yielding. Excessive annealing time reduces the content of ultrafine grains and decreases the strengthening effect of the alloy.

Designing nanoparticles-strengthened high-entropy alloys with simultaneously enhanced strength-ductility synergy at both room and elevated temperatures

Summary: In this study, a novel high-entropy alloy (HEA) was designed using computation-aided thermodynamic modeling, which maintained a stable coherent precipitation microstructure. It was found that increasing the concentration of Cr in the alloy improved both the strength and ductility at room temperature, and eliminated intergranular embrittlement at high temperatures, resulting in a transition from brittleness to ductility.

Microstructural and mechanical behavior of a CoCrFeNiCu4 non-equiatomic high entropy alloy

Zijuan Xu et al.

Summary: The study systematically investigated a Cu-rich non-equiatomic HEA, revealing changes in alloy behavior during thermal cycles and thermomechanical processing, including continuous melting and discontinuous solidification of Cu-rich and CoCrFeNi-rich phases. The alloy softened and became more ductile after annealing at different temperatures, with varying effects on mechanical properties. The observation of yield-drop phenomena at certain annealing temperatures suggests further research is needed to understand the locking of pre-existing dislocations by unknown atmospheres.
