Recurrent acinic cell carcinoma of the parotid gland with lateral skull base invasion: Case report and discussion of the literature

Summary: This study reviewed the medical records of a 76-year-old woman with recurrent acinic cell carcinoma of the left parotid gland and lateral skull base invasion. She underwent subtotal petrosectomy followed by radiation therapy. After surgery, she remained disease-free for more than 16 months.

Tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes and tumor-associated macrophages as potential predictors of lymph node metastases in major salivary gland cancers

Summary: The purpose of this study was to determine if tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes (TILs) and tumor-associated macrophages (TAMs) could be potential predictors of lymph node metastases (LNM) in salivary gland cancers (SGC). Immunohistochemical markers related to TILs (CD3, CD4, CD68, and FOXP3) and TAMs (CD68 and CD163) were investigated, and their densities were measured on digital images. The results suggest that a high density of specific TIL and TAM subpopulations may be associated with a higher probability of LNM in SGC.

Acinic cell carcinoma of the oral and maxillofacial region: an international multicenter study

Summary: The aim of this study is to describe the characteristics of AciCC in the oral and maxillofacial region, including its prevalence, clinicopathological features, and prognosis. The study retrieved AciCC cases from 11 pathology centers in three different countries. A total of 75 cases were included, with the majority being females (65.33%) and the average age of 45.51 years. The most common presentation was an asymptomatic nodule (64.28%) in the parotid gland (70.68%). Surgical treatment was performed in most cases (59.19%), and recurrence and metastasis were observed in a significant proportion of cases.

Head and Neck Acinic Cell Carcinoma A New Grading System Proposal and Diagnostic Utility of NR4A3 Immunohistochemistry

Summary: This study aimed to establish a histologic grading scheme for low-grade acinic cell carcinoma (AciCC) and found that factors such as age, tumor necrosis, and nuclear anaplasia were adverse prognostic factors. High-grade AciCC defined by mitotic count and/or necrosis was associated with worse overall survival. NR4A3 immunohistochemical stain showed high sensitivity and specificity for diagnosing AciCC. Further studies are needed to assess the prognostic value of intermediate grade.

Acinic cell carcinoma of the parotid gland: Timeo Danaos et dona ferentes? A multicenter retrospective analysis focusing on survival outcome

Summary: This study analyzed the demographic data, surgical and adjuvant treatment data, and survival outcomes in adult patients with acinic cell carcinoma of the parotid gland. The results showed no statistical differences in prognosis based on age, sex, surgery type, radicality, neck dissection, pathological stage, and adjuvant therapy. Contrary to existing literature, high-grade tumors were not predictive of recurrence or aggressive behavior.

Summary: This study reported a rare case of a 59-year-old male with a parotid tumor containing both mucoepidermoid-like and acinar elements, but with a molecular phenotype of squamoglandular variant of acinic cell carcinoma. Cytopathology of acinic cell carcinoma: A study of 50 cases, including 9 with high-grade transformation

Summary: Although ACC remains diagnostically problematic in FNA cytopathology, a correct diagnosis was made in almost two-thirds of cases. The Milan classification system categorized 84% of cases as malignant or suspicious for malignancy, but an absence of conventional serous acinar cell morphology in some cases and lack of ancillary testing in almost two-thirds of cases impacted diagnostic performance.
