Investigating engineering identity development and stability amongst first-year engineering students: a person-centred approach

Mary Elizabeth Lockhart et al.

Summary: Engineering identity is an evolving construct that is closely linked to engineering persistence. This study uses a new technique called Random Intercept Latent Transition Analysis to identify three stable classes of engineering identity among first-year undergraduate students. The study also finds that women are more likely than men to advance to higher engineering identity classes over time, and that the COVID-19 pandemic has had a negative impact on the development of engineering identity for some students. Additionally, the study suggests that calculus readiness upon college entrance may be an important factor in students' choice of engineering majors.

Latent Transition Analysis With Random Intercepts (RI-LTA)

Bengt Muthen et al.

Summary: Translational Abstract Modeling with latent classes over time is a common approach in psychology, but the traditional latent transition analysis (LTA) model is unnecessarily restrictive. This article presents a better statistical approach that fits the data much better, provides better estimates of the transition probabilities, and extracts new information from the data. By allowing random intercept variation in the model, a clearer interpretation of the data is achieved.

Linking undergraduate professional identity development in engineering to major embeddedness and persistence

Seterra D. Burleson et al.

Summary: This research used latent growth modeling to study the effects of changes in professional identity over time on adjustment and persistence in the engineering field, finding that professional identity development is a dynamic process that significantly impacts the adaptation and persistence of both men and women in STEM career pathways.

Making Sense of Diversity and Inclusion in Engineering

Stephanie Lezotte

Summary: This study examined how three engineering teams conceptualize diversity and inclusion, revealing that even teams tasked with transformative change sometimes perpetuate normative conceptualizations of D&I, indicating there is still much work to be done.
