Enhanced thermoelectric figure of merit in indium and ytterbium double-filled skutterudite bulk materials through simultaneously optimising power factor and reducing thermal conductivity

Ying Lei et al.

Summary: YbxCo4Sb12 and InxYb0.3Co4Sb12 bulk materials were synthesized using microwave synthesis and spark plasma sintering. By filling indium into the voids of CoSb3, carrier concentration and mobility were regulated, resulting in an improved power factor. The combination of phonon-resonant scattering and other phonon scattering mechanisms led to a significantly decreased lattice thermal conductivity. Excellent thermoelectric performance was achieved in In0.4Yb0.3Co4Sb12, reflected by its high ZT value at 773 K.

Towards energy filtering in Mg2X-based composites: Investigating local carrier concentration and band alignment via SEM/EDX and transient Seebeck microprobe analysis

Sanyukta Ghosh et al.

Summary: A comprehensive understanding of multi-phase materials requires characterization of transport properties at the micro/nano-scale. Optimized alignments of the conduction bands and valence bands at the interfaces of multi-phase materials can enhance the properties of thermoelectric materials. In this study, a micro-scale characterization technique is introduced using different analysis methods to assess the band diagram and estimate the band offset in multi-phase materials. The results show changes in carrier concentration and band offsets in composite materials synthesized without doping, and demonstrate the ability to measure and manipulate the band offset within the composite to achieve optimal thermoelectric performance.

High homogeneity and ultralow lattice thermal conductivity in Se/Te-doped skutterudites obtained by self-propagating high-temperature synthesis and pulse plasma sintering

M. J. Kruszewski et al.

Summary: In this study, Se and Te co-doped CoSb3 bulk materials were fabricated using self-propagating high-temperature synthesis and pulse-plasma sintering techniques, which resulted in high chemical homogeneity and improved thermoelectric properties. The simultaneous doping and filling of voids in the skutterudite structure led to an ultralow lattice thermal conductivity and a dimensionless figure of merit of 1.1 at 723 K. These findings highlight the potential importance of the combined self-propagating high-temperature synthesis and pulse-plasma sintering techniques in the fabrication of chemically homogeneous and efficient thermoelectric materials.
