Three-Membered Aluminacycles

Chenting Yan et al.

Summary: Three-membered-ring scaffolds of carbocycles, namely, cyclopropanes and cyclopropenes, are widely found in natural products and pharmaceutical molecules. They have unique reactivity and have been extensively studied as synthetic intermediates and versatile building blocks in organic synthesis. Incorporating heteroatoms into these three-membered cyclic structures has attracted significant attention due to their fundamental differences in electronic/geometric structures and reactivities compared to their carbon congeners. The recent development in the chemistry of low-valent aluminum species has allowed access to unprecedented aluminacycles. This Perspective focuses on the advances in the chemistry of three-membered aluminacycles, including their synthetic protocols, spectroscopic and structural properties, and reactivity towards various substrates and small molecules.

Chelating Bis-silylenes As Powerful Ligands To Enable Unusual Low-Valent Main-Group Element Functions

Shenglai Yao et al.

Summary: In this study, a series of compounds containing low-valent central atoms were successfully synthesized using bis(NHSi) ligands with electronically and spatially different spacers. The chemical reactions and electronic structures of these compounds were investigated. By controlling the Si–Si distance, a variety of low-valent compounds of Si, Ge, and Sn elements were synthesized, and the o-carborane-based bis(NHSi) ligand enabled the oxidation of Si and Ge as well as the isolation of new compounds. Furthermore, future research directions were proposed, such as applying bis(NHSi) ligands to other main-group elements and developing acyclic silylene ligands.

Synthesis of Homo-Metallic Heavier Analogues of Cyclobutene and the Cyclobutadiene Dianion

Xiongfei Zheng et al.

Summary: The reduction of boryl-substituted Sn-II bromide with potassium graphite leads to the generation of a cyclic tetratin tetraboryl system, which is a non-aromatic homo-metallic analogue of cyclobutadiene dianion. Abstraction of the cations or oxidation results in contraction or cleavage of the Sn-4 unit, while protonation generates a heavier homologue of cyclobutene. This study provides insights into the charge distribution and reactivity of the [Sn-4{B(NDippCH)(2)}(4)](2-) dianion.

Disproportionation and Ligand Lability in Low Oxidation State Boryl-Tin Chemistry

Xiongfei Zheng et al.

Summary: Boryltin compounds in +1 or 0 oxidation states can be synthesized from the carbene-stabilized tin(II) bromide by using strong reducing agents. The formation of distannyne and distannide systems using reducing agents mirrors related germanium chemistry. However, systems of the type [Sn(boryl)](n) are unstable with respect to disproportionation. Quantum chemical studies reveal a viable mechanism for this rearrangement involving a vinylidene intermediate, which generates Sn(boryl)(2) and trinuclear [Sn-3(boryl)(2)].
