Summary: International travel is a risk factor for acquisition of resistant organisms, as shown by increased abundance and diversity of antibiotic resistance genes in fecal samples post-travel. Resistance genes for macrolides, third-generation cephalosporins, aminoglycosides, and sulfonamides were particularly increased. The study also found a significant association between diarrhea or antibiotic use and increased resistome abundance.

What's new in travellers' diarrhoea: updates on epidemiology, diagnostics, treatment and long-term consequences

Summary: This narrative review summarizes key discoveries related to travellers' diarrhoea (TD) in the last two years and suggests future research directions. The findings indicate that TD incidence varies among traveller groups and environments, culture-independent testing has led to continued detection of known pathogens and an increase in multi-pathogen infections. Fluoroquinolone resistant rates are rising and new data on non-absorbable antibiotics are emerging. The interaction of the microbiome in TD prevention and consequences remains uncertain. Overall, TD remains an important travel health issue globally and further research is needed to mitigate risk factors and develop risk-based management strategies.

Impact of international travel and diarrhea on gut microbiome and resistome dynamics

Summary: International travel contributes to the global spread of antimicrobial resistance, and travelers' diarrhea increases the risk of acquiring multidrug-resistant organisms. This study found that diarrhea disrupts the stability of gut microbiome and leads to an increased abundance of antimicrobial resistance genes. The study also identified bacterial taxa that differ between diarrhea and non-diarrhea samples.
