Lignin recovery from cocoa bean shell using microwave-assisted extraction and deep eutectic solvents

Yujie Mao et al.

Summary: This paper presents a novel and sustainable method to recover lignin from Cocoa Bean Shells (CBS) using Deep Eutectic Solvents (DES) and microwaves. The DES-extracted lignin exhibited unique structural characteristics compared with commercial Kraft lignin, indicating the potential of DES in the modification and upgrading of lignin for novel value-added products.

Assessing the availability of bamboo (Phyllostachys pubescens) fibers and parenchyma cells for producing lignin nanoparticles and fermentable sugars by rapid carboxylic acid-based deep eutectic solvents pretreatment

Chen Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, the efficiency of a deep eutectic solvent (DES) pretreatment on bamboo fibers and parenchyma cells was found to be significantly different. The delignification of parenchyma cells was much higher than that of bamboo fiber tissues. Advanced characterization techniques showed that the DES pretreatment facilitated the cleavage of beta-O-4 linkages in lignin and reduced the molecular weights of the pretreated lignin fractions. The DES pretreated lignin fractions were also found to be nanometer scale and facilitated the formation of lignin nanoparticles (LNPs).

Ultrafast process of microwave-assisted deep eutectic solvent to improve properties of bamboo dissolving pulp

Chao Duan et al.

Summary: In this work, an ultrafast microwave-assisted deep eutectic solvent (MW-DES) process was proposed for viscosity control and reactivity enhancement in the production of high-quality cellulose products. The MW-DES process achieved simultaneous fiber swelling and cellulose depolymerization, resulting in a significant decrease in pulp viscosity and increase in reactivity. The DES used in the process showed high reusability and chemical stability, providing a simple, sustainable, and effective alternative for upgrading dissolving pulp from non-wood materials such as bamboo.

Acidic deep eutectic solvent treatment for viscosity control and reactivity enhancement of bamboo dissolving pulp

Chao Duan et al.

Summary: This study demonstrated a green process using deep eutectic solvent (DES) treatment to improve the properties of bamboo dissolving pulp. The results showed that the most effective DES was an acidic one called choline chloride-oxalic acid. Under the optimal treatment conditions, the viscosity of the pulp decreased and the reactivity increased. The positive results were attributed to the depolymerization of cellulose chain and improved fiber swelling and reaction efficiency during DES treatment.

Effects of Deep Eutectic Solvents on cellulosic fibres and paper properties: Green chemical refining

Ahlem Mnasri et al.

Summary: This study investigated the effects of Deep Eutectic Solvents (DES) on the structure of cellulose fibers, focusing on the induced fibrillation phenomena. The results showed that DES treatment could enhance the mechanical properties of resulting papers without significantly modifying the chemical composition, crystallinity, and degree of polymerisation of cellulose. This suggests that DES treatment can be considered as a soft and green chemical refining method for cellulose microfibrillation.

Dissolution and degradation of cellulosic fiber in carboxylic acid choline chloride-based deep eutectic solvents

Xinping Wang et al.

Summary: This study examines the effect of different carboxylic acid choline chloride-based deep eutectic solvents (CA/ChCl DESs) on the dissolution and degradation of cellulose and hemicellulose in bleached chemical pulp from hardwood. The results show that dicarboxylic acids/ChCl are more effective in promoting the solubility and degradation of cellulosic fibers compared to monocarboxylic acids/ChCl at higher temperatures. Additionally, an increase in the alkyl of the carboxylic acid reduces the solubility of cellulosic fiber. The study also reveals that the dissolution and degradation of cellulosic fibers are governed by both temperature and the ability of DESs to form hydrogen bonds, while temperature has little effect on the latter. However, there is no significant relationship between the hydrogen bond basicity of DESs and cellulose degradation and dissolution.

Supply Chain Network Carbon Footprint of Forest Biomass to Biorefinery

Fahriye Enda Tolon et al.

Summary: This study summarizes the carbon footprint of forest biomass to biorefinery supply chain network. The carbon footprint of the biomass supply chain depends on differences in raw material harvest, processing, storage, transport, and other factors. By focusing on key variables such as harvesting and transportation, it is possible to reduce greenhouse gas emissions in the biomass supply chain network.

Esterification of cellulose using carboxylic acid-based deep eutectic solvents to produce high-yield cellulose nanofibers

Suling Liu et al.

Summary: This study utilized carboxylic acid-based deep eutectic solvents for pretreating cellulose, resulting in the production of cellulose nanofibers with widths less than 100 nm through simultaneous esterification modifications. Esterification modifications prevented over-hydrolysis and dissolution of cellulose while maintaining the cellulose I crystal structure. The esterified cellulose nanofibers showed improved dispersibility and interfacial compatibility with polylactic acid, leading to mechanical enhancement of CNF/PLA composites.

Supported liquid membranes based on deep eutectic solvents for gas separation processes

Rita Craveiro et al.

Summary: Deep eutectic mixtures (DES) have shown promise as sustainable solvents, with applications in CO2 capture. This study focused on preparing different choline chloride DES and testing their CO2 solubility and diffusivity. Results indicated that DES composed of choline chloride and urea performed the best, especially when an enzyme for CO2 conversion was added. DES supported liquid membranes also showed high permeability towards CO2 and selectivity for CO2/CH4, making them a viable strategy for CO2 adsorption and separation processes.
