Enzymatic treatment processes for the production of cellulose nanomaterials: A review

Xin Tong et al.

Summary: Cellulose nanomaterials have gained significant attention due to their unique properties. While mechanical treatments for production are possible, they require high energy consumption. Chemical processes are costly and pose environmental concerns. This review focuses on the enzymatic treatment of cellulose fibers, particularly with xylanase and lytic polysaccharide monooxygenases (LPMO), to enhance cellulase efficacy and facilitate nano-fibrillation.

Progress on chemical modification of cellulose in green solvents

Wenjiao Ge et al.

Summary: Cellulose is an excellent candidate for sustainable materials with its good availability, renewability, biodegradability, and biocompatibility. However, its poor solubility in water and common organic solvents restricts chemical modification to heterogeneous conditions or limited systems. Recent advancements in green solvents have enabled more efficient and sustainable chemical modification of cellulose.

Novel Features of Cellulose-Based Films as Sustainable Alternatives for Food Packaging

Sofia Romao et al.

Summary: Packaging is crucial for maintaining food quality and safety, but the reliance on plastic in the packaging industry is a major drawback. Finding sustainable alternatives to conventional plastic packaging is necessary, and cellulose films and their derivatives are among the most used options in food packaging due to their unique properties. Active and intelligent packaging concepts offer new solutions for extending shelf-life and improving packaging properties. This article reviews the properties and functionalization of cellulose polymers and derivatives used in sustainable food packaging, including films incorporating antimicrobial and antioxidant compounds.

Conversion of lignocellulose to biofuels and chemicals via sugar platform: An updated review on chemistry and mechanisms of acid hydrolysis of lignocellulose

Ziyuan Zhou et al.

Summary: This paper reviews the acid hydrolysis of lignocellulose for sugar release, focusing on the chemistry and kinetics of concentrated acid and dilute acid hydrolysis. Challenges such as the difficulty in separating acid and sugar, high temperature requirements, and sugar degradation are discussed. Strategies for efficient recovery of acid catalysts, increasing sugar yield, and reducing sugar degradation need to be developed to overcome obstacles for commercialization. Integration and kinetic control of the process could help reduce energy consumption and extra cost of post-treatment. Solid acid hydrolysis, while advantageous for catalyst reuse, still has a long way to go for practical application.
