Analysis of a Combined Solar Drying System for Wood-Chips, Sawdust, and Pellets

Baibhaw Kumar et al.

Summary: The future of conventional fuels is uncertain due to limited sustainability and the global energy crisis. The use of biomass or wood-based fuels is becoming inevitable. This study developed a novel forced convection solar dryer and created an artificial neural network model to predict the moisture content of the drying system. Observations on the drying behavior of different wood fuels led to the development of drying curves based on calculated moisture ratios. The dryer achieved a maximum temperature of 60 degrees C and had a temperature gradient of 10-20 degrees C. The thermal energy and exergy efficiency of the dryer were recorded as 55% and 51.1%, respectively. The ANN-optimized model showed reasonable correlation values (R) for the prediction.

A conspectus review on solar drying of wood: regional and technical contrivances

Baibhaw Kumar et al.

Summary: Fuel quality is crucial due to the depletion of conventional fuel resources. Wood-based biofuels have been widely used for heating purposes, but their quality is influenced by various factors. The development of solar drying technologies has provided opportunities to improve the quality of wood-based biofuels. However, there is a lack of comprehensive review on wood solar drying systems and optimization approaches. This study reviews the challenges and solutions in wood fuel quality and provides insights on enhancing its quality through solar drying.

An experimental and theoretical analysis of the dynamic response of solar drying in natural convection under rainy month of Maroua (Cameroon) of three tropical wood species

Tanenbe Teussingka et al.

Summary: This study aims to investigate the drying kinetics, heat mass transfer coefficients, densities, thermal effusivities, thermal diffusivities, and Young's modulus of three tropical woods. A comparison was made between drying with a solar dryer and drying in open-air conditions. The experimental study was conducted during the rainy season in Cameroon. Density and thermal properties were found to be influenced by moisture content. The heat mass transfer coefficients varied depending on day and night conditions. Drying in the solar dryer was found to be faster and more recommended than drying in open-air conditions.

Energy and quality analysis of forced convection air-energy assisted solar timber drying

Xiang Chi et al.

Summary: A working mechanism of air energy-assisted solar drying was developed to overcome discontinuities caused by weather conditions and daylight. By using an air-energy assisted solar dryer, timber was dried from a green moisture content of 183% to 11.3% in 161.5 hours, with a moisture diffusion coefficient ranging from 1.28 x10-10 m2/s to 6.41 x10-9 m2/s. The effective solar radiation intensity during drying ranged from 221.3 to 750.3 W/m2. The energy-assisted solar dryer showed suitability for low radiation and various weather conditions.

Implementation of Digital Twin in Actual Production: Intelligent Assembly Paradigm for Large-Scale Industrial Equipment

Huaqiu Ding et al.

Summary: This paper explores and proposes a digital twin (DT)-based technology paradigm for the intelligent assembly of large-scale and non-standard industrial equipment. The paradigm addresses the challenges in the assembly process by integrating key technologies that integrate virtual and physical information. A case study involving the actual assembly of a large-scale aerodynamic experimental equipment demonstrates the effectiveness of the proposed paradigm in providing valuable technical support and improving the transparency and intelligence of industrial equipment assembly processes.

Effects of air-assisted solar drying on poplar lumber drying processes in sub frigid zone regions

Xiang Chi et al.

Summary: This study developed an intermittent air energy assisted solar heating (IAEASH) process to investigate the feasibility and applicability of air energy assisted solar drying in sub frigid zone regions with low radiation conditions. The experiments compared continuous air energy assisted solar heating (CAEASH) with IAEASH and found that IAEASH reduced drying time, increased drying rate, decreased shrinkage of lumber, and had higher energy efficiency compared to CAEASH.

Performance comparison and economic analysis of three solar dryer designs for wood using a numerical simulation

Naoual Bekkioui

Summary: The study compared three designs of direct solar dryer for wood and found that solar dryers with large transparent cover areas had higher drying temperatures and shorter drying times. Comparisons between glass covered and Plexiglas covered systems showed similar drying curves. The effect of using plastic cover was more prominent for dryers with low transparent areas.
