Hydrogen-Bonded Homochiral Molecular Crystals with Mechanical Elasticity and Photomechanical Bending

Pengyu Li et al.

Summary: Molecular crystals with mechanical elasticity and photomechanical bending have been achieved through homochiral assembly. The hydrogen-bonded stair-like packing of V-shaped chiral cyanostilbenes further arranges into tile-window structures, providing enough free volume for molecular motions. The hydrogen bonds in the homochiral crystal enhance crystal resilience and facilitate force transmission for crystal photobending. Our work expands the application of the homochiral effect in regulating dynamic crystal properties.

Mechanically Elastic and Light-Induced Bending of Acylhydrazone-Based Photoswitch Crystal

Madhumathi Lakshmipathi et al.

Summary: We synthesized a dual mechanical responsive acylhydrazone-based crystal Ac that exhibits mechanical elasticity and light-induced photomechanical bending with photoswitching response. Two different mechanical responses were investigated and correlated with underlying packing features. The long acicular crystal Ac derived from 4-nitro benzhydrazide and 10-chloro-9-anthraldehyde shows stress-induced elastic and light-induced photomechanical bending, as well as excellent photoswitching and thermal reversible behavior. Structure-property correlation in the crystal Ac was revealed, and the unique stimuli-responsive mechanical properties were not interlinked with each other. The crystal engineering approach allows for the combination of synergistic mechanical responses for applications in multitasking single-crystal actuators.

Organic crystals with two-dimensional bending and manually twistable properties for flexible optical waveguides

Kui Chen et al.

Summary: In this study, two multi-flexible organic crystals were reported, one exhibiting two-dimensional elasticity and the other exhibiting dual plasticity and elasticity along different directions. Correlations between the structure-property of flexible organic crystals were established by preparing brittle polymorphs. It was discovered that manually twisted crystals can be prepared from 1D plastic and elastic crystals. Detailed crystallographic analyses, energy framework calculations, and nanoindentation tests were used to reveal the mechanism of the multiple mechanical responses of these crystals. These flexible crystalline materials were also applied in the field of optical waveguides.

Photoactuation, photochromism and acidochromism of styrylindazole-based crystalline materials

Huan Xiao et al.

Summary: In this study, three fluorostyrylindazole compounds (FPIZ, TFPIZ, and PFPIZ) were synthesized. The crystal of PFPIZ exhibited phototropic bending under 365 nm light irradiation, which was attributed to the photo-induced [2 + 2] cycloaddition reaction. The acidochromism of the synthesized compounds was observed when trifluoroacetic acid quenched the fluorescence emission. The design of multi-stimuli responsive crystalline materials holds promise for the development of intelligent photoactuators and fluorescence sensors.

Multi-flexible organic crystal responding to different mechanical forces for flexible optical waveguides

Kui Chen et al.

Summary: Researchers reported a flexible crystal with multi-faced elastic bending and plastic twisting, which could be freely bent in any direction even after undergoing severe twisting deformation, achieving the transition to three-dimensional (3D) elastic bending. The mechanisms of multiple flexibilities were investigated by detailed experimental analysis and theoretical calculations. The potential application of this flexible crystal in flexible active and passive optical waveguides was demonstrated.
