The temperature-dependent shear strength of ice-filled joints in rock mass considering the effect of joint roughness, opening and shear rates

Shibing Huang et al.

Summary: Global warming has caused increased rockfall activities in alpine mountains due to the thawing of ice-filled joints in rock masses. This study conducted compression-shear experiments to investigate the shear strength of ice-filled rock joints, considering various factors such as joint roughness, temperature, opening, shear rates, and normal stress. The research found that joint roughness and aggregation of rupture ice area significantly affect the shear strength of ice-filled joints. The opening of joints and increasing temperature reduce the effect of joint roughness, while shear rate and normal stress have opposing effects. The findings contribute to a better understanding of the degradation mechanism of ice-filled joints.

Wind turbine icing characteristics and icing-induced power losses to utility-scale wind turbines

Linyue Gao et al.

Summary: A field campaign was conducted to investigate ice accretion features on large turbine blades and assess power output losses induced by ice accretion. The research found that during icing events, wind turbines experienced up to 80% power output losses.

Overview of the Adsorption and Transport Properties of Water, Ions, Carbon Dioxide, and Methane in Swelling Clays

Arun Kumar Narayanan Nair et al.

Summary: This review provides molecular simulation results on swelling clay systems, showing that the presence of CO2 and CH4 has minimal impact on the distribution and mobility of interlayer water and ions. The mobility of adsorbates generally increases with increasing hydration/RH, highlighting the importance of understanding these mechanisms for effective climate change mitigation.
