A Non-Orientalist Representation of Pakistan in Contemporary Western Travelogues

Summary: Travel writings by Western visitors of the Orient have often been criticized for spreading stereotypes about the people and culture of the East. The dismissal of these narratives, however, is based on a limited perspective that portrays the East as a monolithic entity. Jurgen Wasim Frembgen's travel account provides an alternative narrative that challenges the prevailing discourse and celebrates Eastern culture and religion. This study highlights the need to reexamine Orientalist thought and acknowledge the significance of Western works about the East that have been overlooked.

Silence and the ethics of partial empathy in Tahmima Anam's The Good Muslim

Summary: This article argues that Tahmima Anam's novel The Good Muslim explores the complex relationship between empathy and silence. The novel criticizes both the dismissal and excessive celebration of empathy, and highlights the ambivalence of silence. Through the examination of trauma and rape after the Bangladesh War, the novel exposes the dangers of false empathy and intrusive empathic gestures. Additionally, the novel illustrates how the inability to accept gaps in empathy can lead to the breakdown of understanding.
