Transcriptome analysis provides insights into lignin synthesis and MAPK signaling pathway that strengthen the resistance of bitter gourd (Momordica charantia) to Fusarium wilt

Feng Guan et al.

Summary: By analyzing gene expression data at multiple time points and comparing resistant and susceptible varieties, this study identifies differentially expressed genes associated with Fusarium wilt in bitter gourd. Further analysis reveals upregulated genes involved in phenylpropanoid biosynthesis, plant-pathogen interaction, and mitogen-activated protein kinase signaling pathway. The resistant variety exhibits earlier formation of tyloses to prevent fungal spread, and shows higher enzymatic activities and levels of oxidative stress markers compared to the susceptible variety upon Fusarium wilt infection. This study provides insights into the disease resistance mechanism in bitter gourd.

Roles of Brossinosteroids Signaling in Biotic and Abiotic Stresses

Tingshan Yao et al.

Summary: Brassinosteroids (BRs) are plant-specific steroidal phytohormones that play fundamental roles in regulating plant growth, development, stress response, and interactions with microbes and adverse environments. Understanding the functions of BRs and their regulation network is of great significance for improving crop resistance to diseases and abiotic stresses.

Salicylic acid and jasmonic acid in elevated CO2-induced plant defense response to pathogens

Zhe Li et al.

Summary: Plants respond to elevated CO2 (eCO2) by changing the synthesis and signaling of salicylic acid (SA) and jasmonic acid (JA), resulting in variations in plant defense responses to pathogens. eCO2 typically enhances SA signaling and suppresses JA pathway, leading to the suppression of biotrophic and hemibiotrophic pathogen diseases but the enhancement of necrotrophic fungal pathogen diseases. The modulation of antagonism between SA and JA under eCO2 affects plant immunity to different pathogens. This review focuses on recent advances in SA and JA signaling pathways in plant defense and their effects on plant immune responses to pathogens under eCO2, emphasizing the importance of understanding these interactions in the context of climate change.

Transcriptome and Metabolome Profiling Reveal the Resistance Mechanisms of Rice against Brown Planthopper

Qian Zhang et al.

Summary: In this study, the impact of brown planthopper infestation on the transcriptomic and metabolic changes in rice leaf sheaths was analyzed, and resistant and susceptible rice varieties were compared. The results showed that resistant rice reduced the infestation and growth of brown planthoppers, and exhibited smaller changes in metabolism and transcriptome compared to susceptible rice. Additionally, it was found that resistant rice had lower levels of endogenous hormone IAA and higher levels of SA, along with higher lignin content.

Transcriptomic analysis reveals the inhibition of reproduction in rice brown planthopper, Nilaparvata lugens, after silencing the gene of MagR (IscA1)

X. Liu et al.

Summary: Silencing of the MagR gene in brachypterous female adults of Nilaparvata lugens resulted in shortened reproductive period, reduced fecundity, and hatchability. RNA-sequencing identified 479 differentially expressed genes (DEGs) after 2 days of dsRNA injection, with 352 significantly upregulated DEGs and 127 significantly downregulated DEGs, including 44 key genes involved in the effects of NlMagR silencing on reproduction, revealing the regulatory mechanism of MagR at the RNA transcription level.

Transcriptomic and proteomic responses to brown plant hopper (Nilaparvata lugens) in cultivated and Bt-transgenic rice (Oryza sativa) and wild rice (O. rufipogon)

Yongbo Liu et al.

Summary: Strategies such as conventional breeding and transgenic technology are employed to reduce insect damage in crop production. In this study, cultivated, Bt-transgenic, and wild rice were treated with brown plant hopper, revealing different responses in terms of DEGs and DAPs. Wild rice and Bt-transgenic rice showed similar transcriptomic and proteomic responses to herbivory, while cultivated rice lacked sufficient pathways for response. Crop domestication weakened plant response to herbivory, while the insertion of Bt gene may enhance it. Growing environment also plays a crucial role in regulating gene networks related to plant response to herbivory.

Combined Transcriptome and Metabolome Analysis of Alfalfa Response to Thrips Infection

Zhiqiang Zhang et al.

Summary: The study revealed that alfalfa significantly enriched pathways in flavonoid biosynthesis and isoflavonoid biosynthesis when responding to thrips infection. Additionally, SA and JA signal transduction pathways, PAPM-triggered immunity, and the MAPK signaling pathway-plant pathways played crucial roles in alfalfa resistance against thrips infestation.

Elucidation of the Regular Emission Mechanism of Volatile β-Ocimene with Anti-insect Function from Tea Plants (Camellia sinensis) Exposed to Herbivore Attack

Guotai Jian et al.

Summary: This study found that beta-ocimene interferes with the growth of tea geometrids through signaling and that light is a key factor in the regular emission of beta-ocimene induced by tea geometrids. The beta-ocimene synthase was located in plastids and was found to catalyze the formation of beta-ocimene in overexpressed tobacco. The expression patterns of CsBOS1 and CsABCG in tea leaves attacked by tea geometrids suggest that these two genes may regulate the regular emission of beta-ocimene induced by insect attack in tea plants.

Physiological and transcriptional responses of Phalaris arundinacea under waterlogging conditions

Xin Wang et al.

Summary: The response mechanism of Phalaris arundinacea to waterlogging mainly involves differential gene expression and regulation of metabolic processes. A series of genes involved in carbohydrate metabolism, hormone signaling regulation, etc. were identified. The research findings lay a foundation for further exploring waterlogging resistance genes in Phalaris arundinacea and breeding new strains resistant to waterlogging stress.
