Measuring redundancy: the relation between concord and complexity

Sterre Leufkens

Summary: This paper investigates the relationship between syntagmatic redundancy and language complexity. The study finds that redundancy increases objective complexity, while its effects on subjective complexity are contradictory. To further explore the impact of redundancy on language acquisition and processing, a cross-linguistically valid measurement needs to be established. The paper also presents a typological study on cross-linguistic variation in redundancy constructions, providing a hypothesis for future research on acquisition and processing.

Exposure and emergence in usage-based grammar: computational experiments in 35 languages

Jonathan Dunn

Summary: This paper utilizes computational experiments to investigate the role of exposure in the emergence of construction grammars. The experiments demonstrate that the growth rate of lexicon is faster than that of grammar, and the growth rate of grammar is not influenced by the growth rate of lexicon. Additionally, register-specific grammars converge onto more similar constructions as exposure increases. Furthermore, the rate at which constructions are forgotten is similar to the growth rate of the constructicon.

The nice-of-you construction and its fragments

Adele E. Goldberg et al.

Summary: This article discusses the necessity of using a usage-based construction to explain a certain pattern in English, showing that the construction is closely related to specific adjectives and has fluctuated in frequency over the past century. The unique function of the construction enables predictions about its distribution, including restrictions on adjectives, infinitive complements, modal verbs, and embedding ability. The construction is also related to other constructions within a speaker's construct-i-con network.

Using corpora to foster L2 construction learning: A data-driven learning experiment

Gaetanelle Gilquin

Summary: This study tested the efficiency of data-driven learning (DDL) in construction grammar teaching, analyzing learners' production of constructions, their native-likeness, and evolution over time. It also considered learners' attitudes towards DDL interventions.
