Investigation of the deactivation and regeneration of an Fe2O3/Al2O3?SiO2 catalyst used in catalytic ozonation of coal chemical industry wastewater

Xiangtong Kong et al.

Summary: In this study, the performance of a catalytic ozonation process for treating coal chemical industry wastewater using Fe2O3/Al2O3·SiO2 catalyst was investigated. The catalyst's activity decreased over time due to the formation of a carbonaceous layer on its surface, which inhibited the ozone-catalyst interaction. Calcination was found to be an effective method for restoring the catalyst's activity by removing the carbonaceous layer. Cost analysis showed that regeneration through calcination is economically viable compared to catalyst replacement.

Comparison of membrane fouling during ultrafiltration with adsorption studied by quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D)

Gregor Rudolph-Schopping et al.

Summary: Although membrane technology is widely used in various industries, fouling of membranes remains a significant challenge. In-situ real-time monitoring through quartz crystal microbalance with dissipation monitoring (QCM-D) can provide valuable information on the kinetics and structure of fouling layers. This study aimed to determine the extent to which observations from QCM-D relate to membrane fouling during ultrafiltration. By comparing fouling during ultrafiltration with QCM-D measurements, the study found that QCM-D findings on the attachment of foulants on polymer films are comparable to membrane fouling. This suggests that QCM-D, along with complementary analytical methods, can offer valuable insights into the development of membrane fouling in industrial wastewater treatment.

Effect of microplastic aging degree on filter cake formation and membrane fouling characteristics in ultrafiltration process with pre-coagulation

Weipeng He et al.

Summary: The aging degree of microplastics can significantly affect the membrane filterability and fouling mechanisms during ultrafiltration of pre-coagulated microplastic-containing waters. Chemically-aged polypropylene (PP) microplastics were prepared using HCl or NaOH solutions at different concentrations. The results showed that the aging degree had an impact on permeate flux decline, membrane resistance distribution, and fouled cake layer characteristics. Higher concentration HCl-based aging enhanced the filterability of the ultrafiltration membrane, while lower concentration NaOH-based aging resulted in a smaller permeate flux decline due to the predominant role of humic acid molecules in fouling.

A new insight into the low membrane fouling tendency of liquid-liquid hollow fiber membrane contactor capturing ammonia from human urine

Junhui Zhang et al.

Summary: A comprehensive investigation was conducted to unravel the low membrane fouling tendency and underlying mechanism of liquid-liquid hollow fiber membrane contactor (LL-HFMC) for capturing ammonia from human urine. The results showed that the ammonia flux decline trend and membrane fouling propensity significantly strengthened with the decrease of feed urine pH. This was consistent with the decrease in foulant-membrane thermodynamic interaction energy. Microscale force analysis revealed that the absence of hydrodynamic water permeate drag force and operating at high pH condition minimized the membrane fouling during the LL-HFMC ammonia capture process.

Evaluating the effect of aeration rate on quorum quenching membrane bioreactors: Performance of activated sludge, membrane fouling behavior, and the energy consumption analysis

Kaixin Yi et al.

Summary: Microbial quorum quenching (QQ) is an effective approach to mitigate biofouling in MBRs by reducing biopolymers production and improving sludge conditions. This study investigated the impact of aeration rate on the performance, membrane fouling, and energy consumption of QQ-MBR and C-MBR. It was found that QQ significantly mitigates biofouling, but the efficiency is lowest at high aeration intensity. QQ also reduces the content of SMP and EPS in sludge, with better performance at moderate aeration intensity. High aeration intensity results in the highest energy consumption, while QQ can optimize energy consumption by minimizing aeration intensity.
