Identifying the Costs of a Public Health Success: Arsenic Well Water Contamination and Productivity in Bangladesh

Mark M. Pitt et al.

Summary: This study utilizes molecular genetics evidence and family links to uncover the hidden costs of arsenic poisoning in Bangladesh, estimating its effects on cognitive and physical capabilities, schooling attainment, occupational structure, entrepreneurship, and incomes of the rural population. New estimates are provided on the effects of consuming foods grown and cooked in arsenic-contaminated water on individual arsenic concentrations, based on biomarkers obtained from a sample of rural households in Bangladesh over a 26-year period.
