Effect of temperature on the bending and creep properties of wood plastic composites

Fei Xi et al.

Summary: Five groups of three-point bending tests were conducted to investigate the mechanical properties of WPCs at different temperatures. The results showed a continuous decrease in bending strength and elastic modulus with increasing temperature. Short-term creep of WPCs at different temperatures was better predicted by the Findley model. The long-term creep performance of WPCs under a 50% stress level at different temperatures was predicted using a formula based on the Prony series model and a horizontal shift factor.

Comments on Identification of micro-failure processes of HDPE-henequen fiber composite material by using acoustic emission monitoring: Effect of fiber surface modification

Pouya Rajaee et al.

Summary: Several comments have been made on the method used for fracture toughness assessment in the study Identification of micro-failure processes of HDPE-henequen fiber composite material by using acoustic emission monitoring: Effect of fiber surface modification. The fracture toughness was evaluated using essential work of fracture (EWF), but the fulfillment of EWF prerequisites was not considered for several specimens. These prerequisites include full yielding of the ligament before crack growth and fracture occurring under plane-stress conditions. As a result, the obtained data by the authors are questionable.

Exploring an efficient non-destructive approach to characterize damage behavior and crack propagation of highly-filled wood-plastic composites during three-point bending test

Chen Wang et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the damage and crack propagation of highly-filled wood-plastic composites (WPCs) using digital image correlation (DIC), acoustic emission (AE), and finite element method (FEM). The results show that DIC can assess crack propagation, while AE can accurately evaluate the evolution of damage and crack propagation within the material.

Structural health monitoring of natural fiber-based hybrid composites

M. Saleem et al.

Summary: The article evaluates the mechanical behavior, early damage detection, and failure mechanisms of natural fiber composites using acoustic emission testing (AE). Natural fiber composites are increasingly used due to their low cost, renewable and biodegradable nature, and excellent mechanical properties. The AE behavior of banana-ramie-epoxy composites in tensile tests is discussed for the first time, revealing the close relationship between AE signals and damage mechanisms such as fiber/matrix debonding and breakage. The research suggests that AE can optimize the design and performance of novel composites.

Experimental study of the compressive properties of a wood-plastic composite at different temperatures

Fei Xi et al.

Summary: Wood-plastic composites (WPCs) are environmentally friendly materials with good weather resistance and low cost. This study investigates the effects of temperature on the failure mode, uniaxial compressive strength, elastic modulus, and stress-strain relationship of WPC. Mathematical models are proposed to predict the mechanical properties of WPC in different temperature environments.

Damage analysis of combined continuous and discontinuous thin-ply carbon/glass hybrid composite using acoustic emission

Amos Ichenihi et al.

Summary: By combining partially discontinuous carbon and angled carbon layers with continuous glass and carbon, it is possible to increase the carbon/glass ratio while maintaining pseudo-ductility and improving mechanical properties. Sandwiched DC layers with CC layers show better mechanical properties compared to samples with DC layers sandwiched by CC layers.

Summary: Coextruded wood-plastic composites (Co-WPCs) are multilayer composites that can overcome the drawbacks of WPCs by specific modifications to the composite surfaces. This review summarizes the studies of Co-WPCs, including their mechanical properties, moisture absorption, weathering, flame resistance, and dimensional stability, and presents expectations for further development.
