A novel 3D printable multimaterial auxetic metamaterial with reinforced structure: Improved stiffness and retained auxetic behavior

Yutai Su et al.

Summary: A multimaterial strategy combined with structure innovation is adopted to enhance structural stiffness while retaining the auxetic behavior for auxetic metamaterials. A bimaterial reentrant structure with additional soft arch-like beams and hinges is proposed and investigated using experimental and simulation approaches. The results demonstrate that reducing the strength of the hinge significantly reduces the buckling issue of the beam/wall and minimizes the reduction of auxetic behavior due to increased stiffness. Thus, the strategy to enhance design flexibility for auxetic metamaterials is verified.

Deployment Dynamics Analysis of an Origami-Folded Spacecraft Structure with Elastic Hinges

JoAnna Fulton et al.

Summary: This study focuses on the deployment dynamics modeling of self-actuated deployable space structures. The influence of strain energy hinges on structure deployment is investigated through experimental testing and modeling analysis. A novel folded deployable structure is designed and prototyped for performance evaluation.

Folding and deploying identical thick panels with spring-loaded hinges

Jingyi Yang et al.

Summary: In this paper, a folding scheme based on the Hamiltonian circuit is proposed to successfully fold a flat rigid array into a compact package. The deployment of panels is synchronized using simple spring-loaded hinges, and an optimization method is used to select the stiffness of rotational joints to avoid collisions. This approach can be extended to deployable arrays of various shapes.

Surrogate Modeling Accelerated Shape Optimization of Deployable Composite Tape-Spring Hinges

Hao Jin et al.

Summary: This paper addresses the cut-out shape optimization of a composite tape-spring hinge (CTSH) using data-driven surrogate modeling and shape optimization. The optimized CTSH shows increased stored strain energy and bending moment during deployment compared to the initial design.

Stretchable origami robotic arm with omnidirectional bending and twisting

Shuai Wu et al.

Summary: Inspired by the embodied intelligence observed in octopus arms, magnetically controlled origami robotic arms based on Kresling patterns have been introduced for multimodal deformations, including stretching, folding, omnidirectional bending, and twisting. The highly integrated motion of the robotic arms is attributed to the reconfigurable Kresling unit, achieved through precise magnetic actuation. This technology enables the development of robotic arms that mimic the grasping and manipulation functions of octopus arms, with great potential for various applications.
