Unveiling facet-dependent degradation and facet engineering for stable perovskite solar cells

Chunqing Ma et al.

Summary: Many studies have been conducted to improve the stability of perovskite films, but the role of different perovskite crystal facets in stability remains unknown. In this study, we investigate the underlying mechanisms of facet-dependent degradation of formamidinium lead iodide (FAPbI3) films. We find that the (100) facet is more susceptible to moisture-induced degradation than the (111) facet. Through experimental and theoretical studies, we uncover the degradation mechanisms and observe a d-phase transition on the (100) facet due to strong water adhesion and elongated lead-iodine (Pb-I) bond distance. Manipulating the crystal structure to achieve a higher fraction of the (111) facet leads to exceptional stability of FAPbI3 films against moisture. Our findings provide insights into unknown facet-dependent degradation mechanisms and kinetics.

Modulating Residual Lead Iodide via Functionalized Buried Interface for Efficient and Stable Perovskite Solar Cells

Chunyan Deng et al.

Summary: By functionalizing the buried interface using DDSI2, the distribution and size of PbI2 clusters can be modulated, leading to improved performance of perovskite films. DDSI2 serves as a multifunctional modifier that optimizes the energy level of SnO2 and passivates buried interface defects. The hydrogen bonding and coordination between DDSI2 and perovskite reduce crystal growth rate and lattice stress, resulting in enhanced perovskite quality and modulated PbI2 distribution. The DDSI2-modified device exhibits a power conversion efficiency of 24.10% and a storage stability of 1800 h, demonstrating a unique strategy for the rational control of PbI2 in efficient and stable perovskite solar cells.

Xin Yu et al.

Summary: In this study, interfacial engineering was used to improve the device performance of perovskite solar cells (PSCs). A new multifunctional molecule, 1-methanesulfonyl-piperazine (MP), was introduced to modify the perovskite film fabricated through a two-step process. The MP passivation resulted in reduced trap density and suppressed non-radiative recombination, as well as improved crystallinity and decreased residuals. The MP-modified devices exhibited impressive power conversion efficiency (PCE) and enhanced stability.
