Competition between Lattice Oxygen and Adsorbate Evolving Mechanisms in Rutile Ru-Based Oxide for the Oxygen Evolution Reaction

Shangguo Liu et al.

Summary: The oxygen evolution reaction (OER) is a critical step in water splitting for hydrogen production, and understanding its mechanism is crucial for developing efficient OER electrocatalysts. However, the mechanism of OER, especially in a water-solvent environment, is still not well understood for the widely studied rutile Ru-based oxide. It is still debated whether the adsorbate evolving mechanism (AEM) competes with the lattice oxygen mechanism (LOM) for OER.

Self-Reconstruction of Single-Atom-Thick A Layers in Nanolaminated MAX Phases for Enhanced Oxygen Evolution

Chun Hu et al.

Summary: This study reveals a novel application of a unique MAX phase (V-2(Sn, A)C) as an efficient catalyst for oxygen evolution reaction (OER) due to its self-reconstruction capability. V-2(Sn, Ni)C undergoes surface reconstruction under alkaline conditions, resulting in the formation of nickel-based oxyhydroxide and doping of V and Sn elements. The surface-reconstructed VSNC exhibits significantly enhanced OER performance. This study highlights the potential applications of MAX phase materials in electrocatalysis and beyond.

Summary: In this study, we developed an efficient and robust fully converged constant-potential algorithm based on Newton's method and polynomial fitting for electrochemical interface modeling using density functional theory calculations. Our algorithm demonstrated excellent stability and computational efficiency, accurately calculating the electrochemical potential and nuclear positions of the system. It outperformed other algorithms and is expected to have a wide range of applications in the modeling of chemistry at electrochemical interfaces.

Mechanistic understanding of pH effects on the oxygen evolution reaction

Julie C. Fornaciari et al.

Summary: This paper investigates the performance of the oxygen-evolution reaction (OER) under different pH conditions using a combination of experiments and computational simulations. The study reveals that at low current densities, the OER performs unexpectedly better under neutral pH conditions, while at high current densities, the reaction rate is higher under alkaline conditions.

Diffusion and Surface Segregation of Interstitial Ti Defects Induced by Electronic Metal-Support Interactions on a Au/TiO2 Nanocatalyst

Guang-Jie Xia et al.

Summary: Interstitial Ti defects and O vacancies are common in TiO2-x catalytic support materials and play significant roles in catalytic performance. Au clusters on TiO2-x surface can induce outward diffusion and surface segregation of interstitial Ti defects, promoting the regrowth of TiO2 islands. The interaction between different metal clusters and interstitial Ti affects the diffusion rates and provides insights into reaction mechanisms.

Dynamic Stability of Copper Single-Atom Catalysts under Working Conditions

Xiaowan Bai et al.

Summary: This study evaluates the dynamic stability of single copper atom catalysts under realistic reaction conditions using a constant-potential hybrid-solvation dynamic model. The adsorption of H is found to be the key driving force for the leaching of copper single atoms from the catalyst surface. The study provides a fundamental understanding of the dynamic stability of Cu single-atom catalysts and calls for a reassessment of the stability of currently reported single-atom catalysts considering realistic reaction conditions.

The Ir-OOOO-Ir transition state and the mechanism of the oxygen evolution reaction on IrO2(110)

Tobias Binninger et al.

Summary: A computational study revealed that the classical oxygen evolution reaction (OER) mechanism on iridium dioxide (IrO2) surface should be reconsidered, as it follows a bi-nuclear mechanism rather than the commonly considered mono-nuclear mechanism. This new pathway allows the Ir-O bonds to remain stable, explaining the outstanding stability of IrO2 under OER conditions.
