Engineered origami crease perforations for optimal mechanical performance and fatigue life

Yao Chen et al.

Summary: Perforating creases in engineering origami structures is a practical method, but the effects of perforations on mechanical characteristics and fatigue performance are important to understand. This study proposes ten different perforated creases and uses finite element analysis combined with FE-SAFE to evaluate their folding response, unfolding response, and fatigue life. The crease design with three rows of oblong holes is found to have the best mechanical and fatigue performance. A parametric analysis is conducted to investigate the influence of sheet thickness, hole size, and holes arrangement on the optimal crease performance. The results provide guidance for the application of optimal perforated creases in engineering origami structures.

A methodology for thick-panel origami pattern design

Rui Peng et al.

Summary: This paper proposes an approach for designing thick-panel origami structures considering facet thickness, which can be applied in general cases and keeps one degree of freedom. The key concept is to convert a flat-foldable pattern into a quasi-flat-foldable pattern, and to use it to build thick panel structures while maintaining the motion features of the original pattern. This approach can also be extended to origami tubes and has potential industrial applications.

Approximating cylinders with bundle-folding plane-symmetric Bricard linkages

Shengnan Lyu et al.

Summary: This paper proposes a geometric method using isosceles trapezoids or isosceles trapezoidal prisms to approximate planar curves or cylinders, and applies this method to the design of double-layer cylinder-approximating deployable mechanisms. A novel ITP mechanism is synthesized by linking different isosceles trapezoidal Bricard mechanisms and rectangular Bricard mechanisms.

Origami-based cellular mechanical metamaterials with tunable Poisson's ratio: Construction and analysis

Shengnan Lyu et al.

Summary: This paper introduces a novel family of cellular mechanical metamaterials based on rigid foldable square-twist origami, with tunable Poisson's ratios achieved by adjusting design factors. The kinematics, rigid-foldability, and influences of various combination schemes on in-plane and out-plane Poisson's ratios of square-twist origami are studied. Following a mapping relationship between design factors and Poisson's ratio, cellular mechanical metamaterials with tunable Poisson's ratios can be designed for engineering applications.

Review on recent origami inspired antennas from microwave to terahertz regime

Syed Imran Hussain Shah et al.

Summary: Origami technology shows great potential for developing antennas in the microwave and terahertz regime, but faces challenges related to stability, robustness, and self-deployment. Solutions are needed to design more practical deployable origami antennas. Nanoscale origami antennas for terahertz and optical applications are also promising, but issues like high DNA cost and error rates in fabrication need to be addressed for advancement.

Design of Transformable Hinged Ori-Block Dissected from Cylinders and Cones

Guanglu Jia et al.

Summary: This study explores a new design direction inspired by origami, where solids are dissected and assembled into movable blocks using rotation axes. By connecting classical linkages with ori-blocks, a novel set of reconfigurable mechanisms is proposed, bridging the gap between ori-blocks, origami, and mechanisms. With the potential for various applications, ori-blocks are expected to find wide use in technical fields.

Summary: Origami engineering contributes to the progress of mechanisms innovation as an interdisciplinary subject. This paper proposes a construction method from origami to multiple spherical integrated mechanisms, establishing a bridge between origami and Bennett linkage, Bricard linkage. Furthermore, a special origami-inspired integrated 8R kinematotropic metamorphic mechanism is discussed, applying screw theory to illustrate the reconfigurability of singular configurations in the mechanism.
