In-situ membrane fouling control and performance improvement by adding materials in anaerobic membrane bioreactor: A review

Mohammad Nabi et al.

Summary: Anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) is a promising technology for wastewater treatment, but membrane fouling remains a major challenge. This study reviews the use of different materials to control membrane fouling and improve anaerobic digestion in AnMBR. The mechanisms of membrane fouling control, such as changes in extracellular polymeric substances (EPSs) and soluble microbial products (SMPs), material properties, stimulation of antifouling microbes, and alteration in substrate properties, are discussed. Future research should focus on material-mediated AnMBR applications, including microbial product composition changes, quorum quenching replacement, and molecular-based studies on EPSs and SMPs.

Vibratory membrane bioreactor systems in wastewater treatment: A short review

Recep Kaya et al.

Summary: Membrane bioreactor (MBR) technology is considered a promising method for advanced wastewater treatment due to its high-quality effluent. However, fouling caused by intensive activated sludge used in submerged MBR systems is a major issue. To overcome this problem, researchers have explored the use of vibratory processes in MBRs. This review aims to gather current efforts in fouling control by vibratory motion, specifically in submerged activated sludge membrane bioreactors, and presents a comparative analysis of different vibration types and their experimental results.

Elucidating methanogenesis and membrane filtration performance of a ceramic AnMBR treating municipal waste leachate

Zhiyue Wu et al.

Summary: An anaerobic ceramic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) was studied for its methanogenesis performance and fouling behavior while treating fresh leachate. The system achieved high chemical oxygen demand (COD) removal efficiency and different cleaning strategies were tested for membrane fouling. Inorganic fouling was found to dominate the fouling mechanism and further evaluation of ceramic AnMBR in large-scale research is needed.

A review on anaerobic membrane bioreactors for enhanced valorization of urban organic wastes: Achievements, limitations, energy balance and future perspectives

Yisong Hu et al.

Summary: Sustainable urban development is at risk due to an imminent energy crisis and the generation of large amounts of organic waste, among other factors. Conventional waste management methods have limitations in terms of greenhouse gas emissions and resource recovery, making advanced techniques necessary to convert such waste into bioenergy, bio-fertilizers, and valuable-added products. The anaerobic membrane bioreactor (AnMBR) process has shown promise in valorizing urban organic waste, including food waste and waste sludge, by enhancing organic waste treatment and improving digestion efficiency through the retention and separation of functional microbes and suspended solids. However, challenges such as membrane fouling and mass transfer need to be addressed for wider application of AnMBR, particularly for high-solid organic waste digestion.

A review on membrane fouling control in anaerobic membrane bioreactors by adding performance enhancers

Weonjung Sohn et al.

Summary: Anaerobic membrane bioreactors (AnMBRs) combine anaerobic digestion with membrane technology, offering advantages such as biogas production and potential energy use. However, membrane fouling is a persistent issue that can be mitigated by using fouling reduction enhancers like adsorbents and flocculants. Activated carbon and other enhancers have been applied to AnMBRs to control fouling and promote flocculation and coagulation. This review discusses the impacts and mechanisms of different fouling reduction enhancers in AnMBRs.
