Sit down and rest: Use of virtual reality to evaluate preferences and mental restoration in urban park pavilions

Shixian Luo et al.

Summary: Natural experiences in urban parks have a positive impact on the well-being and quality of life of people living in urban settings. This study used virtual reality (VR) to simulate people sitting in pavilions in Tokyo and found that VR viewing effectively promoted mental restoration. The enclosure of the pavilion did not significantly affect people's preferences and perceived mental restoration. Factors such as prospect and serene dimensions significantly influenced preferences, while richness in species and serene dimensions predicted restoration.

How vegetation impacts preference, mystery and danger in fortifications and parks in urban areas

Lukasz Pardela et al.

Summary: Parks and heritage fortifications are important for urban green spaces, benefiting people, urban nature, and preserving cultural heritage. The study found that greenery in parks increases the sense of danger but evokes mystery, while vegetation on historical fortifications enhances the appeal despite the perceived danger. These findings are valuable for planning and designing sustainable urban green spaces.

An Investigation of the Influence of the Night Lighting in a Urban Park on Individuals' Emotions

Massimiliano Masullo et al.

Summary: Outdoor urban lighting design is a complex issue that requires balancing multiple aspects such as energy consumption, lighting pollution, aesthetics, and safety. Previous studies have mainly focused on the effects of indoor lighting on emotions, while this study aims to investigate the influence of outdoor lighting on individuals' emotions. The results showed that high-intensity cool light made participants more nervous, while warm light made individuals feel more tired and less motivated to explore the park. In contrast, an intermediate correlated colour temperature at low or medium illuminance had a positive impact on individuals. Lastly, participants' mood predicted the impact of park lighting on them.

The Influence of Urban Park Attributes on User Preferences: Evaluation of Virtual Parks in an Online Stated-Choice Experiment

Esther van Vliet et al.

Summary: Urban green areas, such as parks, are important for densifying cities as they promote physical and social activities, recreation, and relaxation. This study found that the number of trees and presence of flowerbeds, especially with a diversity of flowers, significantly influence park users' preferences. Different groups of people evaluate park facilities differently, with natural elements and a variety of flower species deemed important in urban parks.

Why is dense vegetation in city parks unpopular? The mediative role of sense of privacy and safety

Aleksandra Lis et al.

Summary: The density of vegetation in parks and forests has a significant impact on user preferences. This study found that plant density affects preferences by increasing a sense of privacy, which is mediated by privacy and safety. Safety also mediates the relationship between privacy and preference. Introducing quiet, sheltered places in parks can satisfy the sense of privacy and positively influence how users feel.
