Treatment and remediation of metal-contaminated water and groundwater in mining areas by biological sulfidogenic processes: A review

Yu Li et al.

Summary: Heavy metal pollution in mining areas can be treated using the biological sulfidogenic process (BSP) mediated by sulfidogenic bacteria. The sulfur-reducing bacteria (S0RB)-driven BSP has shown promise in treating metal-contaminated water due to its cost-saving and high efficiency. However, current research mainly focuses on sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB)-driven BSP, and a comprehensive review is needed to improve BSP performance in mining areas.

Summary: This study investigates the effect of electron shuttle compounds on the electron transfer behavior of MFC and the formation of bio-nanowires. The results show that the presence of microbial nanowires increases the reduction product concentration in the solution and enhances the transfer efficiency between biofilm and electrodes, resulting in higher output voltage of MFC. Electrochemical measurements also indicate that nanowires enhance the electrochemical activity of the electrode.

Copper removal from wastewater and electricity generation using dual-chamber microbial fuel cells with shrimp shell as the substrate

Hui Wang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the use of shrimp shell and sodium acetate as anodic carbon sources in microbial fuel cells (MFCs) and their impact on electricity generation and heavy metal removal. The results showed that MFCs using sodium acetate had higher voltage and power density compared to those using shrimp shell. Increasing the concentration of shrimp shell also improved the power density. Various electroactive microorganisms were detected in the MFCs at the end of the experiment. These findings suggest that shrimp shell can be used as a substrate for high-content solid waste degradation to provide energy for heavy metal reduction.

Efficient sulfur cycling improved the performance of flowback water treatment in a microbial fuel cell

Xiaoting Zhang et al.

Summary: This study investigated the impact of fluctuant sulfate concentrations on the performance of sulfate-reducing microbial fuel cells in treating recalcitrant flowback water from shale gas extraction. Results showed that sulfate concentration played a significant role in the treatment process, with higher concentrations leading to better COD removal and higher power density. The cycling between sulfate and sulfide contributed to the system's performance, but a long-term decrease in feeding sulfate concentration inhibited power generation. The presence of certain bacterial species supported a high sulfur cycling rate and improved sulfate tolerance, while the absence of others led to a decrease in cycling rate and hindered power generation. This research provides important insights for the bioelectrochemical treatment of wastewater containing recalcitrant organics and sulfate.
