A greenness evaluation and environmental aspects of solidified floating organic drop microextraction for metals: A review

Asim Ridha Hussein et al.

Summary: In the past two decades, green analytical procedures have gained significant attention in various fields, including analytical chemistry. The shift towards green analytical chemistry (GAC) requires the implementation of novel and more effective procedures compared to traditional methods. This review focuses on the influential factors in achieving greenness, such as design, applications, instrumentation, green features, and greenness measurement of the solidified floating organic drop microextraction (SFODME) method for toxic metals. Various solvents, such as ionic liquids, deep eutectic solvents, and biomolecules, have been utilized to develop environmentally-friendly SFODME modes. The green analytical procedure index (GAPI) and analytical greenness (AGREE) are simple and accurate tools for evaluating and comparing the greenness of different SFODME modes, considering factors such as sample collection, chemical amounts, analysis time, energy consumption, occupational hazards, and waste generation. Future developments are also discussed.
