Aldehyde Hydrogenation by Pt/TiO2 Catalyst in Aqueous Phase: Synergistic Effect of Oxygen Vacancy and Solvent Water

Wei Cao et al.

Summary: Through DFT calculations and ab initio molecular dynamics simulations, the model reaction of formaldehyde hydrogenation with a Pt/TiO2 catalyst is studied with explicit solvent water molecules. In aqueous phase, both the O vacancy on support and solvent molecules could donate charges to a Pt cluster, with O vacancy dominantly reducing the Pt cluster from positive to negative. During the formaldehyde hydrogenation, the water molecules can protonate the O in the aldehyde group, generating the OH at the metal-support interface by long-range proton transfer. The presence of O vacancy on reduced support promotes the hydrogenation of OH, making it exergonic and kinetically more facile.

Summary: The role of the solvent in furfural conversion was investigated in this study. It was found that the presence of Bronsted acid sites and the participation of hydrogen atoms from water molecules favor the production of cyclopentanone/cyclopentanol products, while the absence of Bronsted acid sites and the participation of hydrogen atoms from ethanol molecules result in the dominant formation of tetrahydrofurfuryl alcohol.

Phase tuning of ZrO2 supported cobalt catalysts for hydrodeoxygenation of 5-hydroxymethylfurfural to 2,5-dimethylfuran under mild conditions

Tianci Xiao et al.

Summary: The crystal structure of catalyst support plays a significant role in influencing its surface and electronic properties, thereby affecting catalytic activity. By preparing monoclinic, tetragonal, and mixed phase Co/ZrO2 catalysts, different hydrogenation and hydrogenolysis activities were observed in the conversion of HMF to DMF. The interaction between cobalt and t-ZrO2 resulted in higher hydrogenation activity, while the presence of acid concentration on the surface of Co/m-ZrO2 led to higher efficiency in hydrogenolysis reactions. The combination of high hydrogenation and hydrogenolysis activities in Co/Mix-ZrO2 achieved the highest yield of DMF under mild conditions.

Reversed Charge Transfer and Enhanced Hydrogen Spillover in Platinum Nanoclusters Anchored on Titanium Oxide with Rich Oxygen Vacancies Boost Hydrogen Evolution Reaction

Zhen-Wei Wei et al.

Summary: The study demonstrates that Pt nanoclusters supported on porous TiO2 nanosheets with rich oxygen vacancies exhibit significantly higher catalytic activity for the HER compared to those supported on TiO2 with deficient oxygen vacancies. This is attributed to the ability of the TiO2 support with rich oxygen vacancies to facilitate reversed charge transfer and enhanced hydrogen spillover, promoting proton reduction and hydrogen desorption at Pt catalytic sites. This work provides a new strategy for the rational design of highly efficient HER catalysts.
