Opportunities for single-use plastic reduction in the food service sector during COVID-19

Shen Molloy et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 pandemic has led to an increase in the consumption of single-use plastics, particularly in the food service sector. While many participants had already implemented strategies to reduce single-use plastics prior to the pandemic, COVID-19 forced businesses to rely on them again. Barriers to reducing single-use plastics include operational challenges, misunderstanding of waste management systems, cost issues, poor alternatives, greenwashing, and societal convenience culture.

Effect of aluminum leaching pretreatment on catalytic pyrolysis of metallised food packaging plastics and its linear and nonlinear kinetic behaviour

Samy Yousef et al.

Summary: This research aims to study the effect of aluminum leaching pre-treatment on the catalytic pyrolysis of metallised food packaging plastics waste. The results show that leaching and catalytic pyrolysis processes can convert MFPW into high-added energy and chemical products.

Review of household food waste quanti fi cation methods: Focus on composition analysis

Sohani Vihanga Withanage et al.

Summary: The study highlights the knowledge and methodological gaps in quantifying food waste generation, identifying them as major obstacles. Due to the lack of standard methodology, researchers have employed various methods for household food waste quantification, leading to incomparable results. Therefore, the need for standardized methodologies for household food waste quantification is emphasized.

Packaging Innovations to Reduce Food Loss and Waste: Are Italian Manufacturers Willing to Invest?

Antonella Cammarelle et al.

Summary: The research shows that many companies are aware of their need for packaging innovation and the available technological opportunities. However, only F&D manufacturers who demonstrate a real demand, according to a taxonomy approach considering potential and latent demand for innovation, are effectively prompt to invest. Finally, most interviewed manufacturers are willing to invest in at least one packaging innovation, mainly deciding between active packaging and compostable packaging.

Food losses and waste quantification in supply chains: a systematic literature review

Nadine Kafa et al.

Summary: A systematic analysis of 117 studies on food losses and waste quantification in supply chain context revealed that downstream food supply chains are more studied than upstream chains. Case studies of food supply chains in developed countries are more prolific. The main metric used to quantify food losses and waste is weight.

Impact of plate shape and size on individual food waste in a university dining hall

Rachel Richardson et al.

Summary: This study evaluated the impact of changing the shape and size of plates in university dining facilities on reducing food waste, finding that smaller oval platters significantly reduced food selection, consumption, and waste compared to larger round plates. Future research should investigate the effects of these changes on dietary quality and the persistence of waste reduction efforts.

Factors related to recycling plastic packaging in Finland's new waste management scheme

Helen Reijonen et al.

Summary: The study shows that attitudes and perceived behavioral control factors from the Theory of Planned Behavior have significant positive relationships with recycling behaviors in Finland. Factors such as age, living quarters, time spent on recycling, distance to collection points, and willingness to improve were also found to be significantly related to diligent plastic waste sorting.

Impact of COVID-19 on Food and Plastic Waste Generated by Consumers in Bangkok

Chen Liu et al.

Summary: The COVID-19 crisis has led to an increase in food and plastic waste generated by households in Bangkok, primarily due to a shift from eating out to online food delivery services. Reasons for the increase in household food waste during COVID-19 include excessive amounts of food, unappetising taste, exceeding the expiration date, and rotting/foul odours.
